Coal-Vase ahdfire-lrnn Standard No. 165,248. Patented July'6, 1875.
NJETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON I? C.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
GEORGE .IMUNSCHAUER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT m cpAL-vAsEs AND FIRE-IRON STANDARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N01 165,248, dated July 6,1875; application filed May 13,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J OHN MUN- SCHAUER, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in a Combined Coal-Vase and Fire-Iron Standard, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to that class of coalscuttles in which curved arms are attached to the same for supporting the fire-irons, the latter resting upon a fixed ledge or shelf at the base of the scuttle. providing the backof the vase or scuttle with double-curved pivoted arms, and a dish or plate hinged at the base of the scuttle, in such manner that the said arms may be turned on their pivots down upon the wall of the scuttle, and the dish or plate at the base of the latter may be turned up against the wall of the scuttle, the object and construction of which will be fully hereinafter described.
The drawing represents a perspective view of a coal -vase, showing the arms and dish hinged thereto.
A represents the usual metalbox or coalvase for parlor use, the case made either double or single, and ornamented according to taste. To the back of this vase is attached by hinges e c, at a suitable height, curved arms a a, made in one piece, the ends bent around so as to hold or inclose any fire-iron set therein. To. the bottom of this back part, and beneath these arms, is a dish, b, or plate, having a single central leg, 0. The back of this dish is hinged at d to the back of the My invention consists in vase A,so that it will fold up, when not Wanted, as a rest to the bottoms of the tire irons. The arms a a also fold up when not in use, and the box can thus be set close to the wall or other place.
A great advantage of placing these holders at the back is that they are out of sight, and take up but little extra space, besides adding but little to the cost of the box. In packing for shipment this arrangement of the arms and bottom is very advantageous, as, not be ing removable, they cannot become lost or displaced, but simply fold up or down, as before stated.
I am aware that a combined vase and fireiron holder has been made which has a dc tachable bottom and a single arm at the side of the vase; but I believe the arrangement and construction of my device are a great improvement on others.
I do not claim, broadly, a combined coal-box and fire-iron holder; but
I claim- The combination, with a coal-scuttle, of the curved pivoted arms a. a near the top of the scuttle, and the dish or plate I) hinged near the base of the scuttle, all substantially as and for the object specified.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in. the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. J.,MUNSOHAUER.
Witnesses J. R. DRAKE. T. H. PARSONS.
