IMPROVEMENT lN CULINARY GRATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,143, dated J 11110 29, 1875; application filed June 12, 1873.
ternating with depressed perforations that form the grating-surface on the opposite side.
The drawing shows a plate of sheet-tin perforated so as to form a gratingsurface on both sides. The holes are rectangular in shape on the side through which the perforations are made, and have four upwardly-projecting I pointed edges on the opposite side; and it will be observed that the sides of the rectangular perforations on one side are parallel with the sides and ends of the metal sheet, while on the opposite side the corresponding sides of the perforations are arranged diagonally with the sides and ends of the grater.
The advantage of this arrangement is, that in grating vegetables or substances of a tough fiber, by changing from one side to the other,
the fiber becomes entirely disintegrated, and
the process of grating is rendered more rapid and complete.
It will also be seen that the perforations alternating with the pointed edges on each side of the grater form smooth passages or channels through which readily pass any portions of grated substance or liquid left on the gratingsurface. This arrangement also admits of the grater being more readily cleaned than those made, in the ordinary manner, with a grating-surface only on one side.
The side edges of the sheet metal are turned over and receive a wire frame, which is curved at the top to form a handle, and each end projecting through the lower part to form legs.
' What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, a grater constructed as above described, consisting of a thin metallic plate having its edges rolled to receive the ends of the wire handle, and provided with rectangular perforations punched through from opposite sides alternately, and each alternate perforation being .placed diagonally of the plate, as and for the purpose set forth.
