Description
UNITED STATES PATENT .OEEroE MORTIMER MCCALL, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOB KING, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PENCIL-SHARPENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,575, dated J une 15, 1875; application filed May 15, 1875.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that L MORTIMER MCGALL, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Pencil-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, having reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, making a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a longitudinal elevation in perspective 5 Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional elevation, and Fig. 3 an elevation.
This invention relates to a new article of manufacture-a cutting attachment to leadpencils; and it consists in the arrangement of a cylindrical tube, serving as a socket for a colnmon lead-pencil, and as a case for a movable pen-knife, said pen-knife being operated by a knob passing through a longitudinal slot-hole in the said case, into a stub sliding therein. The said pen-knife is held in position by notches or indentations in the said slot-hole, and retained in the case, when not in use, by a coil-spring acting upon the before-mentioned stub.
In order to enable any one skilledin the manufacture of such articles as my present invention to make and use the same, I shall proceed to describe its particulars.
A in the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts wherever they appear, designates a tube of cylindrical form, made of metal, rubber, or any other suitable material, and having a slot-hole, B, longitudinally therein. This tube serves to hold the lead-pencil C, and also to incase a movable pen-knife,l), which knife is attached to a stub, E, sliding within the tube A, and operated by a knob, F, passing through a' longitudinal slot-hole, B. G is a stop, being` an indentation in the said slot-hole, and it serves to hold the pen-knife in its proper position ready for use. H is a coil-spring operating upon the stub E, to hold or retain the knife in the case when not in use. It is held within the tube A by the shoulder or oftsetIon the upper end thereof.
The operation of this device is so simple that I deem it unnecessary to describe it.
My improved device is applicable to many purposes, such as sharpening lead-pencils, or for use in dry-goods stores, for cutting cloth, twine, Sac., and it can be manutacturedand sold at such a low price that it is within the reach of all who have even only an occasional use of such an instrument.
I am aware ot' the patent to WV. R. Evans and L. D. Benner, granted the 25th day of April, 1865, for a combined pencil and eraser, and do not claim such as myinvention; but
What I desire to secure to me by Letters Patent is- As a new article of manufacture, an attachment for lead-pencils, consisting ofthe tube A, having a socket or open end for the insertion of the lead-pencil O, and provided with the longitudinal slot B, stop G, offset I, and knife D, attached to the stub E, operated by the knob F, and retained in the case by the coil-spring H, the whole arranged to operate substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MORTIMER MCCALL.
Witnesses:
MICHAEL J. STARK, JOHN B. EDMoNDs.
