Description
UNITED STATES PATENT GEFICE PERCIVAL D. RICHARDS, OF WEST MEDFCRD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,544, dated December 8, 1874; application filed October 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, PERCIVAL D. RICHARDS, of West Medford, ofthe county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pen-Holders 5 and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a transverse seetion, of a pen-holder as improved by me, the invention consisting in the combination of a three-sided prismatic or pyramidal handle and a rotary adjustable pen-socket or earryingtube arranged with such handle, essentially as shown and described.
In the drawings, A denotes the handle, which, especially where the thumb and second and third fingers of the hand of the user are to bear, is to be three-sided or triangular in transverse section, and to this end the handle may, from its lower end upward, in whole or in part, be a three-sided prism or 'rustum of a pyramid. Vithin the handle, at its longer end, and extending axially into it, is a cylindrical bore, a, 'to receive a cylindrical pen socket or carrier, B, which should be litted closely in the bore, bent so as to be capable of being revolved therein, to adjust or bring the pen to the proper position for writing, when the handle is grasped between and by the thumb and second and third lingers of a hand.
The object of making the handle three-sided instead or" circular in transverse section is to enable it to be held to better advantage by the writer, or, in other words, to lit the triangle, or approximately triangular space, made between the thumb and next two fingers when closed in the positions for holding a pen-handle; also, to prevent the handle from rolling down an inclined table or desk.
Vith a handle of such description, it becomes necessary to extend it nearly down to the pen, and, consequently, the pen-carrier has to be inserted within the handle; and in order to adjust the pen to the handle properly for different individuals, the carrier should turn in the bore, though it should lit thereto so closely as not to turn accidentally.
I do not claim a pen-handle made with liat surfaces, or triangular in section where to be grasped by the iingers of a writer. Nor do I claim a round handle and a round pen carrier or tube with the handle inserted in such tube.
I claim- In combination with a three-sided prismatic or pyramidal pen-handle, A, or one triangular in section where to be grasped by the lingers, a rotary adjustable pen socket or carrier, B, arranged with such handle substantially as specited.
PERCIVAL D. RICHARDS.
