An object of my lnvention is a cigarette 5 holder and damper or snuifer, the snuii'er` being placed over the end of a cigarette or cigar and forming an air-tight seal, causing the cigarette or cigar to be extinguished and forming a burned or charcoaled end on .o the cigarette or cigar.

VAnotheryobject of my invention is to provide the holder with a small pin or prong which engages the cigarette and retains it in the holder. l

,5 Another type of cigarette holder and damper is a case in whichfa cigarette without a holder mouthpiece may be inserted, this forming an air-tight closure and causing the snuing out of the cigarette or cigar placed therein.

A main object of my invention is to provide a device by which a burning cigarette or cigar may be quickly damped or snuii'ed1 by inserting the clgarette or cigar in an air- 25 tight closure, the burnin end of the cigarette or cigar causing t e tobacco to char in a manner similar to forming a substance similar to charcoal and thereby sealing the end of the cigarette or cigar.

It is well known to smokersthat cigarettes and cigars after burning out naturally and being lit again do not have the samewtaste or aroma of the original cigarette or cigar. Moreover, when cigarettes or cigars become extinguished in the natural manner by burning out, the cigarette or cigars become dried. Certain types of cigarettes moreover, have tobacco which will practically continuously burn, whether beinglsmoked or not, and as smokers are Jfrequently required to or wish to stopv smoking, they must either throw away the cigarette or cigar when only partly Esmoked or pinch the end olf or hold same until it becomes naturally extinguished, and

- as above mentioned some types of cigarettes and cigars do not naturally extinguish, but

natura keep burning.

I n that cigarettes and cigars when damped or snui'ed by my type o device retain the same iiavor and aroma as they had originally. This I judge is due to the seal-` ing of the end of the cigarette or cigar by the charring thereof,

My invention will be more readily understood from the yfollowing description and drawings, in which;

Referring rst to the construction of Figs. .1, 2 and 5, a cigarette or cigar holder is deslgnated generally by the numeral 1, having the mouth piece 2 and passage 3 for smoke therethrough. A socket 4.- is constructed in the end opposite the mouth piece for insertion of a clgarette or cigar indicated by the numeral 5. It will be noted in Fig. 2, that the socket is cylindrical as indicated by the numeral 6, whereas in Fi 5 it is tapered as indicated by the numeral to conform to the shape of cigarettes and cigars.

A type of securing device is formed by a ar8 having a prong 9 which extends radially through the aperture l0 into the socket. The bar 8 is preferably located in a groove 11 extending len hwise of the ci arette or cigar holder. his bar is pivota y mounted on a transverse axis 12 and has a .finger engaging end 13 by which the prong or dpin may be retracted from the aperture an from the cigarette or cigar, in which the prong engages.

From the above construction it will therefore be seen that ya cigarette or cigar mounted in my holder with the pin en agin such article prevents same from rea ily allin or dropping from the holder. The free end 13 of the bar having a prong, moreover, forms a device for preventing the holder end with the cigarette or cigar from'rolling on a table or the like.

ing a cigarette or cigar, after a portion of same has been consumed, the snuffel` cap may be placed on the holder, even with the tobacco glowing and burning brightly. On account of the limited air supply the tobacco at the burning end quickly becomes charred, forming a s cies of charcoal. This seems to make a tight seal on the end of the cigarette or cigar, preserving the naIt n order to continue smoking the cigarette or cigar, this charred end may readily be broken olf and the cigarette or cigar relighted.

The receptacle holder and damper of Figures 3, 4 and 5 comprise a tubular structure 20 having an ingular cut-out section 21 in which is fitted a hinged cover 22 having a partial end 23. This cover is designed to swing upwardly asv indicated dotted by the "numeral 24 of Fi 3. The end 25 of the receptacle is close vand the end 26 registers with the end of the cover, thus forming a closure.

A cover form of spring for closing the cover is provided by attaching a leaf spring 27 by screws 28 or the like to part of the receptacle 20 and having the free end 29 slide through a yoke 30. A finger bar 31 is positioned on the op site side of the pivot structure 32 to Whic vthe cover is secured, whereby the cover may be readily opened, it being apparent that the leaf spring will be bent in the reverse direction, thereby causing same to snap closed after a cigarette or cigar has been placed in the holder and damper, or removed therefrom.

It will be apparent that the holder and damper of Figs. 3, 4 and 6 is intended to be used for cigarettes or cigars when a smoker does not use a holder. The action is substantially the same as with the snuifer device of Figs. 1, 2 and 5, inv that on account of the limited supply of air the burning cigarette or cigar quickly becomes charred at the end and may be re-lit breaking oil' the charred end.

Although my invention is of a simple character, it will nevertheless be apparent that it may be materially changed in general construction and in specific details to adapt it for different t es of mouth pieces for cigarettes and clgar holders and that the receptacle type of construction may This isgreferably a friction i practically eliminates the odor from suchholders by closing the exposed end even when no cigarette or cigar is retained in the holder; thus reducing or eliminating the disagreeable feature of having the clothes smell of burnt tobacco by carrying such holders.

It is to be looted that the damper or snul'er-is fitted on the circular end of the. cigarette and cigar holder and rvforms an air-tight seal. The extreme y end of the snuifer also functions to hold the pin type of securing device so that the prong may not be moved. Such ends extend over the groove 11 and prevents movement of the bar 8 and hence the prong 9 which extends through the aperture 10 into the cigarettey or cigar.

By this construction the cigarette or cigar is always maintained attached to the cigarette or cigar holder and is ready for use when the snuffer is detached. Also the prong prevents loosening of the connection of the cigarette or cigar with their holders which allows air to get Iin the snuifer or damper which would carry on a slow combustion. Thus with my cigarette holder and damper there is a substantially air tight seal at the connection between the snuffer and the end of the mouthpiece and at the connection between the cigarette or the cigar and the socket of the mouthpiece.

It will also be noted that with my -holder and snuli'er, that the risk ofvire is materially reduced and that economy is effected in the use of tobacco on account of the smoker not discarding partly smoked cigarettes.

Having described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A cigarette holder, damper and preserver, comprising in combination a holder having a mouth piece with a socket and a smoke passage from the socket to the mouth piece, there being a longitudinal groove in the outside of the mouth piece terminating in an aperture extending from said groove to the socket, said aperture being spaced A ing the prong in the aperture to hold ai a end extendingv out of the groove, cigarette in the holder .and centrally 'posia prong on the bar extending through vthe aperture, the bar terminating at the prong,

2. A cigarette older, damper and reserver comprising in combination a der having a mouth piece and a socket ,with a smoke passage therebetween, there'bein a longitudinal groove in the outslde sur ace of the holder terminating in a transverse` aperture leading .from the lgrooveto the socket, the aperture being spaced from the end of the holder, the outside surface at the end being smooth, a bar mounted on a pivot, said pivot being at the end of -the groove towards the mouth piece and havmg and a tubular damper closed at-one end and o en at the other, theo t ooth exterior of t e holder forming an air tight seal and engaging the bar to prevent movement of same and to retain the prong in the aperture, said prong being n end fitting on adapted to retain Athe cigarette 1n the 25 srgcket centered in the damper.
