My present invention relates to holders for smoking material, such as tobacco in the form of cigars or cigarettes, and more particularly to an improved cigarette holder.

It is well known that cigarettes when once lit almost invariably continue to burn even though the smoker fails to continuously smoke the same.

Unless the smoker is one of the so-called chain smokers, he cannot for a moment put the cigarette down on an ash tray, or on a table, as many of them do, without discovering, when he wishes to again smoke, that the cigarette is nearly, if not all consumed.

Various devices have been made in the attempt to remedy this condition, and none of them, as far as I am aware, have served in the least degree, to remedy this situation.

In this, my present invention, I have constructed a holder that will not only act as a satisfactory holder, but will act to practically eliminate the constant burning of the cigarette if the same is purposely or inadvertently laid down on an ash tray, table, or other support.

In carrying out my invention, and as applied to a cigarette holder, I attach to the cigarette holder, a channel member of heat absorbing material, such as copper, steel, or other similar material and in and on which rests the cigarette. I also, in the base of said channel member, use devices which hold the cigarette firmly in position in and on the channel member. In practice, I also preferably pivotally attach one end of the channel member to the cigarette holder, and with means for removably holding the channel member in operative relation with the holder.

The principal object of the invention therefore, is an improved cigarette holder.

Another object of my invention is an improved cigarette holder having, as an essential element, a heat absorbing elongated channel member extending longitudinally outwardly therefrom.

A further object of my invention is an improved cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece having pivotally attached thereto a heat'absorbing channel shaped member.

A still further object of my invention is an improved cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece and a heat absorbing channel member, and means carried by said channel engaging with a cigarette and holding the same in operative relation with the mouthpiece.

Referring to Fig. 4, I 5 designates a cut-away portion slightly wider than and in which seats one end of a channel or extinguisher member it, of heat absorbing material which serves to extinguish the cigarette when the latter is put down. Within the channel member I6 and secured to the bottom of the channel member in any suitable manner, are the spaced pointed members ll, there being two such members, though any desired number of members I! may be employed.

The channel member i6 is pivotally mounted at one end directly above the cut-away portion l5 on a pivot shaft i8, and, at this end of the channel member i6, is housed a coil spring l9, which urges a pin 26 outwardly of the channel member l6, and into a saucer-shaped depression formed in the material of the mouthpiece ID. This spring is normally under compression between an end of a housing 14 formed in said channel member and a collar portion of said pin 20. The channel member I6 is thus hingedly attached to the mouthpiece, and may be readily swung from the position shown in full lines in Figs. 2 and 5 to the short dash line position, or vice versa. Upon movement of said channel member it from said full line position to the dash line position aforesaid, that part of the channel member within the holder 5!] and which extends from said pivot shaft l8, forcibly contacts the cigarette above and ejects it from the channel member is as said movement is completed.

With the parts of the device as shown in Fig. 2, the cigarette i3 is positioned on the upper edges of the side walls of the channel member and on the spaced pointed members H with the channel member IS in the full line position shown in such Fig. 2. If now the cigarette is lit, and smoked down to the point indicated by the numeral 2|, it will be noted that the live portion slopes backwardly toward the mouthpiece 10, indicating that combustion is slower at that point and only partial and soon ceases. This action is caused by the conduction of heat away from the burning end of the cigarette by the heat conducting material of the channel member. This action is accentuated the more firmly the cigarette is placed in contact with the upper edges of the side walls of the channel member.

Further, the channel member acts as an ash tray, and will hold the ashes of the cigarette during the entire smoking operation, or the ashes may be flicked from the channel member at any desired time.

While I have shown the channel member as what may be termed a. three sided member, I do not limit myself to this exact construction, as obviously I may use a channel member that is oval or circular in cross section. It may be made of various materials as, for instance, sheet metal, stainless steel or aluminum.

What I claim as new is:

1. A cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece having a socket for receiving a cigarette, and an extinguishing member adapted to receive ashes from said cigarette of non-combustible material attached to said mouthpiece extending outwardly therefrom and being U-shaped in cross section, the sides of said extinguishing member being separated from each other by a distance less than that of the diameter of a cigarette and having one end attached at the interior of the socket and alined therewith so that a cigarette having one end in the socket will contact the upper edges of both of said sides to support said cigarette thereon.

2. A cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece having a socket for receiving a cigarette, an extinguishing member adapted to receive ashes from said cigarette of non-combustible material attached to said mouthpiece extending outwardly therefrom and being U-shaped in cross section, the sides of said extinguishing member being separated from each other by a distance less than that of the diameter of a cigarette and having one end attached at the interior of the socket and alined therewith so that a cigarette having one end in the socket will contact the upper edges of both of said sides to support said cigarette thereon, and a pin member attached to said extinguishing member between said sides and extending angularly therefrom adapted to penetrate the wrapper of a said cigarette.
