HEAT EXCHANGER.

In a patent of Prat No. 1,409,967 of March 21, 1922, there is described a heat exchanger made of plates mounted side by side and spaced apart with open ngs arranged in such a way that the heating fluid and the heated fluid pass through alternate spaces.
In the said patent, the spacers between the plates consist of coil springs or the like which permit the passage of a fluid and which at the same time secure tight joints.
My invention provides a heat exchanger of the same type and which permits the use of heating fluids having higher temperatures than can be used with a coil spring spacer. The accompanying drawings illustrate embodiments of the invention.

Referring to the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the plates which separate the passages are indicated at 1, 2, 3 and 4. Between the top and bottom edges of the plates 1 and 2 the space is closed by plates 5. The same arrangement is provided for the top and bottom of the spaces between the plates 3 and 4:. The alternate spaces, for example, that between the plates 2 and 3, are open at the top and bottom and closed at the front and back by plates 6.
At their open edges the plates are held in position by spacers which at the same. time permit the free passage of the fluids. According to Figs. 1 to 4, each spacer comprises a pair of narrow plates or bars 7 with cross pieces or struts 8 between them at intervals, welded or riveted to the bars 7 The plates and spacers thus assembled are held against lateral movement by any usual or suitable frame and are pressed against 1924. each other endwise by means of two sets of heavy springs, one at each end of the assemblage. Or a solid abutment may be provided at one end and a single set of springs at the opposite end.
A number of compression springs 9 are arranged to bear against the endplate 4 in line with the cross pieces 8 of the spacing elements. A bar 10 bears against the outer ends of said springs and is pressed forward by means of adjusting screws 11 threaded through a fixed bar 12 constituting part of the surrounding frame. By the provision of a similar spring arrangement at the opposite end, the plates and spacers are held firmly in position.
The shapes of the plates, and the location of the openings at their edges, and con sequently the direction of flow of the fluids may be considerably varied; several difien ent arrangements being shown in the Prat patent above referred to. Also various other spring arrangements may be provided, and various'st-yles of spacing elements.
According to Fig. 5, a pair of plates 2 and 3 are spaced apart by separate short spacers or struts 13 arranged to fit between the plates and provided with flanges 14 bearing against the edges of the plates.
According to Figs. 6 and 7, the plates are held apart on their open edges by channel formed spacers or struts 15 which bear directly against the faces of the plates and extend outward beyond the edges of the plates, where they are held in proper relative positions by means of bars 16 fastened to opposite faces of their projecting portions with bolts 17. v
The arrangement described is economical in construction and permits theuse of high temperature fluids since the springs are placed outside of the fluid passages.
Though I have described with great'particularityof detail certain embodiments of the invention, yet it is not to be understood therefrom'that the invention is restricted to the particular embodiments disclosed.
