The object of my invention is to provide a suitable device for use in whitewashing, scraping, painting, washing and the like of ceilings and the like for the purpose of enabling such labors to be carriedout without necessitating removal of the furniture'of the rooms, the device being arranged so as to shut off the part of the ceiling under: operation so as to prevent splashes of whitewash, paint, water and the like from soiling the walls or furniture.

In the following the device shall be eX- plained with reference to the accompanying drawing, illustrating an executional form of the same in perspective.

The device comprises two ladderlike standards 1, 2 provided with cross pieces 3, which serve as supports for a board or platform l on which the operator stands when performing his whitewashing, etc. The two standards are interconnected by longitudinal boards or bars 30, which serve also as steps for enabling the operator to reach the board 4. On the rear side the standards 1" and 2 are interconnected by the board 31 and the stays 32. p

The board I is provided at its ends with projections 6, to prevent the board from slipping off the cross pieces 3. In the upper part of the standards 1, 2 there are provided a series of openings 7 for the insertion of bracket arms 9 and 10 at different heights. These brackets support the cross bars 12 and 13. 'To the other end of the said cross bars and the brackets 9, 10 are fastened standards 15 and 16, 17 and 18, 19 and 20, said staudards being connected at their upper ends by lists or boards 21, and intermediate their ends by pieces 22, each pair of standards forming together with said cross boards a support frame. The arms 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 are provided at their lower ends with slots 27, by which they may be connected with the screw bolts 14:, arranged at the ends of the boards 12, 13 and fastened in position by nuts. The said frames serve to support pieces of cloth, paper or the like 23 that are laid over them, as indicated in dotted lines in the drawing, whereby there are formed three splashtight walls that may be pressed on to the walls of the room or to the ceiling. The bottom of the space thus walled off by the cloths 23 is shut off by aid of detachable fiat boxes or trays 29 of sheet metal or the like, said boxes or trays serving together with the cloths 23 to take up such splashes of whitewash, paint and the like as are unavoidable in Work of this kind. If desired, the covered space may also be shut off on the fourth side by arranging a rod on which slides one or two curtains (not shown) so as to only give room for the operator. The upper cross boards 21 are provided at their outer edges with a number of notches 28, adapted to straddle any tubing or the like arranged on the wall, in order that the boards 21 may be swung as near on to the wall as possible. These notches also serve to prevent the cloths 23 laid across them from sliding out of position. The whole apparatus is arranged to be easily detachable, the connections being preferably made by screw bolts and thumb nuts. In the standards 1, 2 are arranged a series of holes 34 for the insertion of screws 33 arranged at the ends'of the boards 31 and stays 32.

By aid of this device itis possible to have ceilings, etc., whitewashed, painted and scraped without necessitating the removal of I the furniture of the room and Without in any way soiling or dirtying the walls or floor of the same.

Claims:

LA scaffold comprising a pair of standside, aplurality of parallel laterally projecting arms supported by said standards adjacent the upper ends thereof, a frame secured to the outer ends of said arms, a plurality of cross members supported by said arms, a frame secured to each end of said members, and flexible member supported by said frames, said flexible member forming protective shield surrounding three sides of said scaffold.

A scaffold comprising a pair. of standards, a plurality of vertically disposed frames, a plurality of laterally projecting arms adjacent the upper ends of said standards for supporting said frames, a tray mounted on said arms, a platform mounted on said standards below said arms, and a flexible member supported by said frames,

said member and said tray forming a pro-- tective shield substantially closed on its sides and bottom.
