"Another object or" theinvention istofpro-n vide a sheet metal table 'topf with'alijlaiifge that is ri'gi'd vand easily assembled.
ifinother object of the invention is to provide air-aine 'which can be expanded by driving in place transverse braces or cleats to take the bulge or'bow out of the metal top and to hold it rigid.
A further object is to provide a trame for a metal table ot suoli construction'that the side. rails or members or'y which will not buckle Vto release the pressure onthe metal top. Y
T he subject matter of this invention is disclosed in my patent tor metal table top stretcher patented August 14th 1923, Number 1,464,910, but is not claimed therein, the present application includes only the table top and frame and illustrates, describes and claims novel features over my co-pending application for table tops iiled June 26, 1923 Serial Number' 722,605.
'With the preceding and advantages in the novel combination of elements, conother objects and structions and arrangement of parts, opera-V tions and specific featuresA to be hereinafter enlarged upon, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of thevdevice.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 oi Fig. 1.
Figure of the frame thereof, and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing the method or attaching a leg to the top. Y
ln the drawings a table top is illustrated, but it is apparent that the invention may be embodied in metal draining'boards for sinks, counter trays, meat-display racks and the like.
Numeral 1 indicates a pressed sheet metal table top having the depending sides 2 and the inturned flange 3 forming a channel in which a frame rests. y
The frame consists of end strips 4 and sliding strips 5 having sliding engagement through the tongue 6 on the ends of sid strips 5 and grooves 7 iormed on the inside of the end strips 4.
Transverse expanding cleats or braces 8 are forced betweenthe side "groovesltl vin the 'side's'trip's' ,5
ydisen'gagement.
in mind the invention consists 3 'is a dissembled perspective viewl strips 5 at suitablej points and their`v 'tongues 9y yengage to prevent p flie'enji` asat",l1',"ijor the purpose longitudinal' s stripsl back lroin 'the mitre 11 and "cutaway portions or reduced ends 13 are provided o5 whereby pressure is exerted on the end fla-nge 2 of the metal top.
The lower outside edge of the side strips 5 are beveled as shown at 14. This beveled edge 14 is particularly limportant because without it, if the outside edge ol the side strips 5 were left square, the side. strips 5 would have a tendency to buckle thereby reducing or removing the pressure from the flange. in the face or' the members 4 the purpose of which will be described below.
In operation the sheetl metal table top is laid fac-e downward on a work bench (not shown on the drawing) and the end strips 4 are put in place. rlhe side strips 5 are then placed with their tongues 6 engaging the grooves 7 and slide to their outer position.
The transverse braces or cleats 8 are next as shown on the dotted line positions,
1 and'driven to the full line position in the same ligure. lt is, fof course, understood that the transverse braces 8 are long enough to exert a considerable pressure when driven intoplace so that any bulge or bow, which may exist in the sheet metal top will be removed.
The braces 8 are lett in position and thus placed in Fig.
by means of the tongue and groove connections between braces 8 andthe side strips 5, and between the side strips 5 and the end strips 4 a rigid and durable trame is provided.
The mitered ends remove the pressure from the corners or' the table top and exert it only on the ends and sides, thereby insuring such pressure that will entirely remove anybulge or bow from the table top.
In Fig. 4 the Vmeans of attaching a leg to the table top is shown. Anangle 16 attached to the leg L by a screw'17 is inserted inthe slot 12 the right angle extention ofV the angle 16 lying in the groove 15.
It is to be understood that only a pre- Jferred form or" my invention is herein shown and described and that any departure from is 'the ends'trips.4`aremitered o0 n or' rei'njoving presf "sure 4from the co'i' iiers ot thetable topfiand lots 12 are cutfin'these 'end A longitudinal groove isprovided the same, such as in shape, size or arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. In combination with a sheet metal table top having a flanged rim, a frame adapted to lit in the Hanged rim,'said frame comprisingslidable side members, end members coacting with the side members, mitered, slotted and reduced ends on the end members whereby pressure is removed from the corners of the table top and exerted on the central portion of the ends thereof and transverse braces adapted to be forced between the slidable side members.
2. A device of the character described comprising grooved end members, mitered, slotted and reduced end thereon, slidable grooved side members, tongues on the ends of the side members and adapted to be received in the grooves of the end members, a beveled lower, outer edge on the side members whereby the side members are prevented from buckling and transverse.` braces adapted to force the side members away from each other, seid braces provided with tongued ends adapted to fit in the groove of the side members.
