TABLE TOP.
Application filed June 26, 1924. Serial No. 722,605.
An object of the invention is to provide a metal top for tables, draining boards or the like.
Another object of' the invention is to provide a sheet metal table topl with a flange that is rigid and easily assembled.
A further object of the invention is to provide a frame which can be expanded by driving in place transverse braces or cleats to take the bulge or bow out of the metal top and to hold it rigid. y
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the :following description.
The subject matter of this'invention is disclosed inv my copending application for metal table top stretcher filed Feb. 24, 1922, Serial No. 539,816, which eventuated in Patent No. 1,464,910, issued Aug. 14, 1923, but is not claimed therein, the present application includes only the table top and frame.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same;
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the device' Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-'2 of Fig. 1 and,
Fig. 3 is a. disassembled perspective view of the frame thereof.
In the drawings a table top is illustrated, but it is apparent that the invention may be embodied in metal draining boards for sinks, counter trays, meat display racks and the like.
The numeral 1 indicates a pressed sheet metal table top having the depending sides 2 and the inturned flange 3 forming a channel in which a frame rests.
The frame consists of end strips 4 and sliding side strips 5 having sliding engagement through the tongues 6 on the ends of side strips 5 and grooves 7 formed on the inside of the end strips 4. Y
Transverse expanding cleats or braces 8 are forced between the side strips 5 at suitable points and their tongues 9 engage grooves 10 in the side strips 6 to prevent disengagement.
In operation the sheet metal table top is laid face downward on a work bench (not shown on the drawing) and the end strips 4 are put in place. The side strips 5 are then placed with their tongues .6 engagingthe grooves 7 `and slide to their .outer position.
The transverse braces or cleats 8 are next placed on the dotted line position, as shown in Fig. 1 and driven to the full line position in the same figure. It is, of course, un-
derstood that the transverse braces 8 are long enough to exert a considerable pressure when driven into place so that any bulge or 05 i bow, which may exist in the sheet metal top will be removed.
The braces 8 are left in positionand thus by means of the tongue and groove connections between the braces 8 and the side strips 70 5, and between the side strips 5 and the end strips4 a rigid and durable frame is provided.
It must be understood that only a preferred form of my invention is herein shown and described and that any departure from the same, such as in' shape, size or arrangementof parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or' from the spirit or the scope of the sub- 90 joined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In combination with a sheet metal table top having' end and side flanges; a frame 85 having grooved end members and slidable side members provided with tongues for sliding engagement with the said grooved end members for forcing the said end members against the end flanges of the` table top;
and transverse braces adapted to be forced between the said sliding side members to expand the sheet metal table top.
2. In a device of the character described a sheet metal table top having end and side flanges; a frame having grooved side members, and end members grooved to receive tongues provided on the ends of the grooved side members for sliding movement whereby the end members are forced against the end flanges of the table top; and transverse braces adapted to be forced between the grooved side members to expand the sheet metal table top and having tongues formed on the said braces to prevent displacement the grooves of the end members and transagainst the ianges, the second mentioned 10 verse braces having a tongue on each end members being in engagement with the tbereoi:l adapted to engage the grooves of the ianges at right angles to those engaged by side members. the first mentioned members, and elements e'. In combination with a sheet metal table engaging the edges of the second mentioned top having depending` flanges, frame memframe members operative to force the said 15 bers engaging opposite flanges of the top, members apart and into engagement with members engaging the inner edges of the the flanges of the top. first mentioned members for forcing their OAK LANDAV.
