RULE.

Application filed August 14, 1926. Serial No. 129,243.

This invention relates to a rule, the general object of the invention being to make the rule in sections which telescope each other so that the rule can be drawn out to a considerable distance when in use and be folded or contracted to a size which will permit the rule to be placed in the pocket of the user.

Another object of the invention is to provide the rule with flat faces on which the graduations may be placed.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front View of the rule in r extended position.

Figure 2 is a rear View thereof.

Figure 3 is a View of the four sections of the rule taken apart.

Figure 4 is a view of the rule in folded position.

Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view through the device, with the parts in contracted position.

As shown in these views, the rule is composed of a plurality of sections, the drawing showing four sections 1, 2, 3 and 1. Each section is formed with a channel-shaped central part 5 and a flat part 6 on each side of the channel part and all of the sec tions, with the exception of the top section l, are provided with a hook part 7 at each side thereof, the hook part of the section 1 receiving the hook parts of the section 2 and the hook parts of the section 2 receiving the hook parts of the section 3, while the hook parts of the section 3 receive the straight parts 6 of the section 4:, the sections being inadeof different sizes so that they can fit in each other, as shown. The section 1 has a reduced upper end which forms shoulders 8 for forming stops for the shoulders 9 of the section 2 which are formed by the enlarged lower end of the section 2.

The section 2 is also provided with a reduced upper end forming shoulders 10 which are engaged by shoulders 11 formed on the lower end of the section 3, and said section 8 has a reduced upper end forming shoulders 12 which are adapted to be engaged by shoulders 13 formed on the lower end of the section A. These shoulders prevent the sections from being drawn entirely apart, yet permit the sections to telescope each other, as shown in Figures 4 and 5. The front faces of the parts 6 of each section are provided with the graduatio-ns 14, as shown in Figures 1 and 1.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a simple form of extension rule which may be formed of metal or other material and the parts of which can be easily assembled. The rule can be extended to a considerable length, depending upon the sections used and when collapsed, it will take but little space so that it can be carried in the pocket of the user.

A thumb notch 15 is formed in the top of the member 3 and a projection 16 is formed on the upper end of the part 4 so as to facilitate opening of the sections.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.

hat I claim is An extension rule comprising a plurality of telescoping sections, of gradually increasing size, all but the smallest or innermost section having channels at the sides, the channel of one section receiving the channel part of another section, with the inner section engaging the channel of the next section, means for limiting the outward movement of the sections, such means comprising a reduced end on one section forming shoulders and shoulders on the next section which are formed by an enlarged end of the said section, said shoulders engaging each other.
