Application filed January The object which I have irr View is the provision of a structure of such character which may be inexpensively manufactured of sheet metal, which will bestrong and durable, and of an attractive. and ornamental appearance.
jMy invention, although advantageously applicableto many kindred purposes, is es pecially' adapted for bath room stools, fern stands and the like.
Iir'generalmystructure is of the following character. I
The bodyportion with the legs lntegral therewith is stamped from sheet metal and bent up into inclosed, preferably circular form and its ends connected together as by 'interengaging hooked flanges which are clamped together. The top element is provided with a continuous flange which is forced down within the body portion, thus bracing the same from within. The top is also supported on the top edge ofthe body portion The legs, which depend from the body portion areprovided with cross-braces, and preferably diverge downwardly. The lower edges of the'body portion and the vertical edges of the legs are preferably provided with inturned flanges to add strength The adjacent legs are connected by up wardly arched portions which add strength and rigidity to the legs, and this is augment edby the inturned-fian es.
, .I provide a new and improved foot structure.
Other: novel features of construction, and also structure and arrangement of parts will appear from the following fdescription.
In the accompanying. drawings, wherein I haveillustrated the best embodiment of the principles of my invention now known to me, 7

13, 1926. 'Serial No. 80,892.-
The following is a detailed description of the drawings.
A is the body. portion-stamped froni'sheet rnetal of preferably about 22 gauge and haymg formed integrally therewith the depending legs 1. While the body portion A may especially stamped in one piece, I prefer to forin it of at least two'sjections which are provided with .rearwardly turned hook flanges 2fw'hich are interlocked and clamped tightly together so as to forn'r a continuous body wall of inclosje d shape. While the connected up body maybe of any shape I prefer a v cyliljidrical fornn The lower edges of thebodyAand the vertical edges of the legs 1 are provided withinturned flanges 3, th'e flanges of the legs and of the body being continuous. impart a substantialappearance to the structure and also add strength and rigidity.
It will belnoted that the legs decrease in width downwardly and are joinedat their upper ends by arches or bowsin the lower- The flanges 7 a ing Verticaledge V ceive the rivet 5 bywhich the cylindrical rubber foot 6 is attached.
The top B of thestool shown in Figsl and 2 is also stamped ofsheet metal andhas a rounded edge 7 to similate a wooden seat;
The top or seat is preferably slightly de-.-
pressedto further simulate the conventional wooden seat. The top fisalso provided with a continuous depending flange-8 which is thrust down within thebody portion A, thus bracing it outwardly-and holding it against any tendency to collapse. .The top and its load are supportedjby resting. onthe top. edge of the be dy portion; as best'shown in Fig. 2'.
The legs preferably diverge downwardlyfrom the body portion and are connected together and braced in position by the metal cross-braces 9 whose ends are bent at an angle and riveted as at 10 or otherwise attached to the legs.
r In forming the are preierably bent longitudinally toform the central angle 11 which adds to their strength and ability to resist lateral strains and thrusts.
The ends of the sections of the'body portion A may be welded or otherwise. connected but I find that theinterlocked hook flanges are satisfactory. V
In the fern-stand embodiment illustrated invFigs. tand 5, the top B. is of pan or sunken form, the side wall 12 of the pan forming thefiange which is introduced down inthe body portion and braces the same g top B to the body 7 ornamental appearance.
and braces "the same from edges o'lf said sections outwardly. The top of the body portion A .in this case is provided with an outwardly extendingfl'ange 13 and thetop B is also provided. with cheaper but better article than a corresponding stool or stand made'of wood.
-What I desire to claim is 2- V a 1. A sheet metal construction of the character described comprising the combination of a body formed of aplurality of sections bent and having their ends connected together to form an inclosure and said sections being provided with depending legs, and a top supported on said body and having a flange which ,flts down into the body Within, the lower and the vertical edges [of the legsbeingprovided, with inturned strengthening flanges, V lower edges of the sections and those on the "the flanges on the adjacent legs being continuous.
2.;A sheet metal construction of the char I acter described comprising the combination integrallegs depending ofa body portion bent and its edges secured together to form an inclosure and having rom the body portion, the tops of said legs being connected fwith continuous and by arched portions of the lower edge of the body portion, the sides of the legs and the adjacent arched portions being provided inturned flanges, and a 'topportion supported on said body portion and providedwith a .within the body portion and braces the same from within. 1
