Description

"March 8, 1927. 1,620,543.
5. GOLDBERG HAIR CURLER Filed Jan. 1926 //v VENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 8, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAIR CURLER.
Application filed January 2, 1926.
This invention relates to hair curling de vices and the object of the invention is to provide a new and improved curler which is designed to produce a wave that is known as a Marcel wave.
Another object of my invention is to produce a device upon which the hair may easily and conveniently be wound, and which will hold the hair thereon in a tightly wound position.
Another object of my invention is to produce a device on which the hair may be coiled either towards the scalp or away from it.
The invention will be hereinafter considered in detail and specifically claimed. Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this application wherein there is lllustrated a preferred embodiment of my 20 invention, but it is understood that the elements thereof can be varied or changed as for shape, size or form without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a view of the curler when it is open.
Fig. 2 is a view of the curler when closed.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 8-3.
1 denotes a circular rod whose diameter decreases from the two ends to a minimum at the centre as shown in Fig. 1. A semicylindrical lock 4 is pivotally attached to the rod and is shaped to conform to the rod 1, so as to engage and hold securely the ends of a lock of hair. To one end of the rod there is attached a fiat metallic plate 5 which is bent somewhat upward at the opposite end. This end fits into an opening 6 which will now be described.
One end of the rod 1 fits rotatably and tightly into a hollow cylinder 7, provided Serial No. 78,975.
with an opening or slit 8. The rod is provided with a pm 9 which fits into the slit 8 and keeps the cylinder securely on rod '1. The end of the flat plate 5 fits into the open ing 6 which is produced by the hollow cylinder and rod 1 as shown in Fig. 3. The opening 6 is large where the end of plate 5 enters it. As the cylinder 7 is rotated to more securely engage the end of plate 5, the opening becomes narrower and thus presses the plate 5 down, holding the hair tightly in position.
The ends of the hair are first engaged at the centre of rodl by means of lock 4, wound around the rod 1 and held securely. there by fiat plate 5.
Another method is to start winding the hair on rod 1 and then gradually going to the other end.
Having described my invention what I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a curler formed of a rod whose centre is of a smaller diameter than the ends, a 5 locking device for the ends of the hair, a flat plate to hold the curled hair in place and means to hold the fiat plate securely in place.
2. A curler comprising a rod of cylindrical cross section tapering from both ends to the center thereof, a lock for the ends of the hair secured to said rod, and a holding degice for the curled hair secured to said r0 3. A curler comprising a rod of cylindrical cross section tapering from both ends to the center thereof, a lock for the ends of the hair secured to said rod, a holding device for the curled hair secured to said rod, and a rotatable clamp. for securing said holding device in place.
