Application filed September 29, 1923. serial No. 665,529.
This invention relates to a garbage can in which refuse is adapted to be deposited.
It is an object of this invention to provide a novel form of garbage can or container in which a removable flexible envelope is adapted to be supported for receiving the refuse and which can be quickly removed with the refuse enveloped therein.
The invention comprisesthe novel structure and combinations of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the'appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred form of'this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views. p I a .Fig. 1 is an enlarged'vertical section view through the garbage can. j p
Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the can.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the can.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectionaldetail of the can illustrating certain features.
In the illustrated embodiment of this invention, the can or container is shown as consisting of a cylindrical metal member closed at its bottom and provided'with a hinged cover for normally closing the top. The cylindrical wall of the can is perforated so that air can readily pass through-the contents of the can and aerate and dry the same to prevent decay and objectionable odor before the contents are removed.
A hinge plate 1 is secured at a suitable position upon the can to support the coverf This hinge plate has a pair of upstanding arms 2 which are slightly ofiset from the plane of the plate and extend a suitable distance thereabove to support the cover in open position free of the mouth of the container. The upper ends of these arms are provided with hearing hubs or eyes which are straddled bv the apertured bifurcations of the metal hinge straps 3 secured to the cover 4. Pivot pins connect the metal straps to the hearing hubs. Each hinge strap has a stop member 5 secured thereon, comprising a narrow angular piece of metal which slopes upwardly. and rearwardly and is adapted to abut its adjacent hinge arm 2 when .the cover is raised, as shown in dotted. lines in Fig. 1. p a
The cover 4 is providedwith an inner circular bead 6 which is stamped inwardly from the cover in the form of a fold. This bead is fairly steep and has an inward slope or bevelso that it will enter within the can or container when the cover is lowered.
Exterior of the bead 6 there is a shallow concentric bead 7 which is spaced from the The refuse may be deposited .within the bag in the container by simply raising the cover a suitable'distance. When it is desired to remove the garbage the c'over'may be swung back as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, the band 8 raised and removed whereby the ends of the garbage bag may be brought together and tied and removed, as is obvious.
If desired, the cover may be equipped with spring controlled hinges to hold the cover in closed position. A latchmay' also be rovided for holding the cover in open position against the closing action of the spring controlled hinges.
I am aware that numerous details of.
construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the I claim as my invention:
In a device of the class described, a perforated container, a flexible envelope secured interiorly thereof, a pair of brackets secured upon the container and offset therefrom, a cover having a circular fold extending interiorly of the container, apair of hinges connecting said cover to said brackets, and a stop member on each hinge coactlng Wltll' its bracket for holding said cover in open position free from the mouth of the container whereby the envelope may be easily removed. I
In testimony whereof I have subscribed my name.
