: Application filed November 24,-1924. Serial no. 751,787.
This invention relates to article holders, and more particularly tov a holder for newspapers, periodicals and the like and adapted to be arrangedupon a lawn in front of a house to receive'the paper or periodicalasit is brought by the newsboy or postman.
An important obj provide a device ofthis character so constructed that it may be very cheaply and readily produced and will be durable and efiicient in service. V v i A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that when a paper'or periodical is placed therein and a wind is blowing it will swing-to present the end of the paper or not be unduly frayed or injured by theplay of'the wind thereagainst.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein for i the purpose of i1- lustrati'on is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, and wherein Figurel is a side elevation of an article holder constructed in accordance with my 7 sists of a shank 10 adapted to be forced into I the ground'and having at its upper end a coil 11 lying to one side of theishank, this invent-ion; c
Figure 2 is a view at right angles to that shown in Figure 1; 1 a a V Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 1, Referring to the drawing, the device concoil being formed with a plurality ofiturns of considerable size, preferably about one,
foot in diameter. At their lower ends the turns of the coil are bound to one another by a clip 12 held in position by the extremi- 7 form a loop 13, the end portion of which engages against theside face of the coil,
as indicated at 14', to prevent slipping of the clip. By this construction a plurality of wedge-shaped slots are formed, and if' the V ect of the invention is to which the clip maynot escape.
is material employed in the formation ofthe coil be resilient the insertion of a paper or periodical'in the coil will tend to wedge the coil open so that it exercises'a clamping effect to hold the paper in position. The coil being off-set to one side of theshank 10, if a paper is inserted in the coils will oper ate asa weather-vane, placing' the strain in c proportion to the force of the-wind, tending to rotate the shank 'l0until the coil lies in such position that a plane transverse to its a aXis is directedfinto the wind, thusdirecting the end of the article into the wind and pre venting tearing or distortionth'ereof which which is left straight to provide the shank and the opposite end of which, is coiled to provide the coil 11 and the retaining end portion or loop In the construction of the device, .the p It will be obviousfrom the foregoing that v apaper holder constructed in accordance v with my invention maybe very cheaply and readily produced and is of such construction that it willbe relatively long-lived. Since obviously somemodification vof the structure is possible, I do not limit myselfto such specific structure except as; hereinafter Y claimed. 5
I claim A holder for newspapers,
providedat its upper end with a coil having and a clip constricting the'coil at the bottom thereof, anend portion of the coilbeing bent to engage the coil in spaced relation to the endthereof to thereby provide a loop through which the clip is directed and from periodicals or the like comprising a round, shank V adapted to be inserted in thefground and In, testimony whereofl hereunto afiix my 7 signature. 7
