Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLF KNECHT, 0F NEIV YORK, N. Y.
METHOD OF VENTILATING- SHIPS, &C.
Speccaton forming part of Letters Patent No. 16,059, dated November 11, 1856; Reissued July 6, 1858, No. 570.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, RUDOLF KNECHT, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Ventilating Ships, Houses, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangements of wings on an upright shaft in connection with tubes leading into the ship or other room which requires to be ventilated. One set of wings being on the top in the open air and the other set of wings in the place which is to be purified. The whole being operated either by the action of the wind or by any other mechanical power.
In the accompanying drawing A A represents the decks of a ship the space (B) between which is to be ventilated.
C is an upright shaft passing through the upper deck A and through the Ventilating pipes D and E, and running in bearings in the upper end of the pipe D and in the lower deck A.
F are wings attached to the upper end of the shaft C directly above the top of the pipe D. G are wings attached to the lower end of said shaft C. The pipe E comes within a short distance to thevupper sides of the wings (G) and is then carried up on one side of the pipe (D), through the upper The operation of the apparatus is as follows: By the revolution of the shaft C, the wings G will draw in the fresh atmosphere through the pipe or tube E, cooling the same while passing through the perforated plate N, if the saine is covered with ice, or saturating the same if any herb, such as mint, is placed upon this plate N. This fresh healthy air partly purifies the thick, heavy, unhealthy air which exists in the room 'and eXpels the same with the assistance of the wings F above the top of the pipe E through said pipe.
I do not claim wings to draw in fresh air, or to expel the foul air out of a room nor do I claim the Ventilating tubes but f What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination and arrangement of two sets of wings on one shaft acting simultaneous, so that while one is expelling the foul air the other will draw in fresh air in the manner substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
RUDOLF KNEOHT.
