CHIMNEY-CAP.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, WILLIAM BROWNELL, of Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Ventilator or Ventilating Chimney-Cap; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to this conical portion is situated a cap C,

which incloses, and is considerably larger in diameter than, said shaft, thus leaving a considerable space all around the periphery thereof. Directly over the shaft there is a comparatively narrow space, and the top of the cap above mentioned covers its mouth, thus preventing any water falling therein. But near the outer edge of the top of the cap is a series of perforations b, b, situated so far outside of the top B that no water can fall through the same into the shaft of the ventilator. the under side also, of the cap, and outside of the shaft, is another series of apertures, or short tubes, a, a, through which the air can pass up or down; and which allows any water, coming in through the apertures b, b, to escape.

This construction of the cap, and arrangement in respect to the shaft of the ventilator, entirely excludes rain and snow therefrom; and the double series of holes a, a, and Z2, I), allow a free motion of the air up or down through the cap, thereby not only preventing any check or eddying of the draft; but also assisting or accelerating it, on account of the well known law of the action of a current of air upon the con- Through tiguous air.

lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The herein described construction and arrangement of the venilator, for the purposes specified.
