IMPROVEMENT IN HORSESHOES.

Specification foiming part of Letters Patent No. 160,565, dated March 9, 1875; application filed August 4, 1874.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, THOMAS B. BISHOP, of Washington city, District of Columbia, have invented an Improved Combination -Horseshoe, of which the following is a specilication:

The object of my invention is the construction of a horseshoe, so combined with vulcanized rubber or other suitable elastic compound as to prevent the horse from getting lamed or injured by concussion on hard carriage-ways, as is frequently the case with the ordinary shoe on the concrete and other hard roadwavs.

My improved shoe is illustrated in the aocompanying drawing, in which Figure l represents a top view ot :my shoe. Fig. 2 is a bottom view. Fig. 3 is a section at line a'. Fig. 4t is a section at line y.

A is an ordinary metallic shoe. B is a vulcanizedrubber shoe, having cushions a projecting through the inner plate. O is a plate of metal, which is placed and fastened onto the shoe A, and holding in place the rubber shoe B by means of screws b. D is a metallic plate at front of shoe, which is intended to keep the rubber in place at the toe, and is also removable by taking out the screw b. It will be observed that the cushions on the rubber shoeB are rounded oft' at the front edges c, so as to prevent the shoe from tearing, and to prevent the horse from slipping.

My shoe, when constructed, is placed on the horses hoof in the ordinary manner by means of nails.

The principal object of my invention is to prevent concussion to a horse when traveling over hard carriage-ways, such as concrete and similar hard substances, and by this means to prevent lameness caused in many instances by the sinews of the leg being strained and otherwise injured and impaired by the concussion on hard and unyielding substances and roadways.

The inner plate O can be removed by loosening the screws b, so that when the rubber shoe B is worn out, or otherwise made uuserviceable, it can be taken out and a new one substituted, or if the metallic shoe A should be worn out and unserviceable it can be removed and a new one substituted, the inner plate O protecting and holding the rubber shoe B in its place.

Having thus described my invention, and its uses and construction, I will now state my claim- As a new article of manufacture, the combination of the shoeAwith the rubber B and inner plate O, together with the projecting cushions d, rounded at the front yedges c, all constructed and arranged as described, and for the purposes set forth.
