The present invention relates to valvespring lifters, and an object thereof is to provide a construction which will be inexpensive to manufacture and strong and durable in use, while atthe same time making it possible to maintain a parallel relation between the jaws.
To this and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter de scribed; the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 and 2 indicate two jaw members formed of sheet-metal bent into channel form. Each jaw member has at one end a jaw 3 formed with a seat -1- which is adapted to cooperate either with the spring 5 of the valve or portion 6 about the valve, as shown in F 1 of the drawings. Each of these jaw portions 3 has an opening or recess 7 which is formed to surround the valve stem 8 and to permit the passage of the spring 30 abutment'pin therethrough. The aw members are connected by two pairs of links 9, each pair being pivoted to one of the jaw members at 10 and having a sliding movement on the other jaw. Preferably the members of each pair of links lie on the outer sides of the jaw members and the pivot 10 extends between them across the channels of the jaw members. The other ends of each pair of links have a pivot member 11 connecting its members and operating in slots 12- formed in the channeled sides of the jaw members. Each pair of links is pivotally connected substantially midway between its ends with the other pair of links so that there is obtained between the two jaw members a parallel motion. Preferably the pivotal connection between the two pairs of links is in the form of lateral projections 13 on opposite sides of a bolt or screw member 14. This bolt or screw member extends loosely through an opening 15 in an abutment member 16 which is engaged on its outer face by a nut 17 adjustable on the screw member 14.
The abutment member 16 is ofchannel formation and has the side walls of its channel formed at their edges on inclined sur-' faces 18. The ends of the abutment member extend into pockets formed at the ends of the jaw members preferably by cutting away the bottom of the channel so that the sides of the channel project at 19 beyond the bottom of the channel and on opposite sides of the opposite ends of the abutment member 16. Preferably the bottom of the channel of a jaw member is deflected laterally at 20 for engagement with the surfaces 18.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the abutment piece for the nut has a. sliding engagement with the ends of the jaw members which are moveclin parallel lines away from each other by the link connection between them. The surfaces of the abutment member engaging the ends of the jaw members are inclined with reference to the plane of the abutment member so that a great-er ease of actionbetween the abutment member and the jaw members is secured, the jaw members moving toward the ends of the abutment member or down the inclines as they separate. The jaw members are of channel construction and the bottom of each channel is cut away to provide a pocket or recess in which the abutment member moves. The bolt is preferably rigid with and connected to the pivotal connection between the links.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A valve-spring lifter comprising a pair of jaw members, two links, one pivoted to each jaw member and having a sliding connection with the other jaw member, a pivotal connection between the links, a bolt connected with the links at the pivotal connection, an abutment member slidably mounted on both jaw members and through which the bolt extends, and a nut operating on the bolt and cooperating with the abutment member.
2. A valve-spring lifter comprising two j aw members provided with recesses in their ends, two links, each pivoted to one of the jaw members and having a slidable connection with the other jaw member, pivotal connection between the links, a bolt having connection with said pivotal connection, an abutment member guided in the recesses in the ends of'the jaw members and having an opening through which the bolt extends, and a nut operating on the bolt and cooperating with said abutment member.

3. A valve-spring lifter comprising a pair of aw members of channel construction, the bottom ot the channel bemg cut away at each end, so that the sides of the channel project beyond the bottom, and the bottom of the channel adjacent said cutaway portion being bent laterally to provide a seat, two links each pivoted to one of the jaw members and slidably connected to the other jaw member, a pivotal connection between the links, a bolt secured to said pivotal connection, an abutment member received between the sides of the channeled jaw members and engaging said seats, said abutment member having an opening through which the bolt extends and a nut operable on said bolt in FREDERICK G.
