Description
PATENTED DEC. 24, 1907.
P. CORK & 1). NAGLEB. COMBINATION WRENCH AND PLIERS.
APPLICATION TILED AUG 15 1906 7 1 II J HF. I
To all whom it may concern:
DWIGHT N AGLEE, citizens of the United States, residing at Weston, in the county of Lewis and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combination Wrench and Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination l0 wrenches and pliers, the object being to provide a pair of pliers with an adjustable jaw so that they can be used either as pliers or as v a wrench.
With this and various other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and combination of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification:Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved plier and wrench. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a guide member. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of one of the handles. Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the sliding jaw. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the worm-gear. Fig. 6 IS a section taken .on lines 66 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing A indicates one of the handles which is provided with an enlarged apertured portion A, having a jaw A projecting therefrom. A circular recess is U formed in the enlarged portion A in which the enlar ed round a ertured portion B of the-hand e B, is pre erably mounted on a pivot pin C.
The round portion B is provided with an 1 upwardly projecting perforated portion B ihaving a vertical groove B formed therein adjacent its forward edges which is cutaway 40'forming one half of a guide-way for the pur- 'pose hereinafter described. A transverse 'groove 13", is formed in the upper end of the portion B adjacent the groove and is provided with semi-round recesses B at its top and bottom. A perforated member D formed exactly like the portion B is riveted to the portion 13 by rivets E, and has a corresponding vertical groove D, cut away adjacent its forward edge forming the other half of the guide-way, in which the T-shaped tongue F, of the jaw F is slidably mounted which is provided with a rack edge F The member D is provided with a transverse groove D having semi-round recesses D at its top and bottom, corresponding to the recess B, forming sockets in which the Specification of Letters Patent.

hearing lugs G, of a worm-gear G is mounted which Works in the o ening formed by the transverse grooves and meshes with the gear F ofthe ton ue F, so that the jaw can be opened and c osed as desired. A notch-A is formed in the edges of the portion A, and the enlarged portion B, is provided with a notch B forming a wire cutter.
A The end of the jaw B carries a pivoted link B ada ted to fit over a hook A formed on the end dles together.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that we have provided a pair of liers so constructed that one of the jaws can Be adjusted so as to enable the jaws to take hold of a small or large piece of material as desired. Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent iszj 1. The combination with a pair of handles provided with enlargements pivoted together, a jaw formed on the enlargement of one handle, an upwardly projecting portion formed on the enlargement of the other handle, a complemental member secured to said upwardly projecting portion, forming a guide-way, a jaw 'slidably mounted in said guide-way and means for adjusting said jaw, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a pair of handles, provided with enlargements ivoted together, of a jaw projecting out rom the enlargement of one of the handles, an upwardly projecting portion formed on the enlargement of the other handle and provided with a groove, a com lemental member secured to said upwar ly projecting portion and provided with a groove, a aw provided with a tongue having a rack edge mounted in the grooves of the said upwardly projecting portion and member, and a worm-gear mounted in said member and adapted to engage said rack tongue, for the purpose described.
3. The combination with a pair of handles provided with enlargements pivoted together, the enlargement of one handle fitting into a corresponding recess in the enlargement of the other handle, a jaw projecting from said recessed enlargement, an upwardly projecting portion formed integral with said enlargement fitting into said recess and provided with a vertical groove and a transverse groove, a compleniental member secured to of the handle A, and hold. the hansaid upwardly projecting portion, a jaw slid ably mounted in said upwardly projecting portion and provided with a rack, a wormgear monnte in said transverse groove and meshing with said rack of said jaw, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a pair of handles provided with enlargements pivoted to gether, the enlargement of one handle fitting into a corresponding recess in the enlargement of the other handle, a jaw projecting from said recessed enlargement, an upwardly projecting portion formed on the enlargement fitting into said recess and provided with a vertical groove and a transverse groove, a coinplemental member secured to
