WATER GAUGE.

This invention relates tewater gauges', and more particularly to what I term a double tube glass water gauge.
One of the main objects of the inventionV is to provide a water gauge of simple and eiicient construction which can be produced and applied at relatively small' cost. A further object is to provide a gauge so constructed as to insure that the glass water tube `vill at all times be clear so as to permit the water column to be readily viewed.
oother object is to provide simple and eflicient means for washing out the gauge so to remove particles of foreign materials therefrom. Another object is to provide simple and efficient means whereby the glass gauge may be swabed out, when necessary,

The gauge includes an upper head 1 and a lower head2 which may betermed the' steam head and the water head, respectively, 'for convenience of. description. A petcock 26 communicates with casing 25 and provides means for permitting escape of water 'from .the casing when desired. A glass tube head 1. Head 2 is provided, at the lowerVV end of nipples 13, with an inwardly projecting shoulder 13 which forms a seat for the lower end of glass tube 27. A closure plug 29 is threaded into nipple 15 of head 2 and acts to normally close this nipple, this plug, for convenience of operation, being provided with a stem 30 on the lower end of which is secured a hand wheel 31. As will be readily understood, packing glands and gaskets are employed wherever necessary or desirable and these members may be of any suitable or preferred construction In practice the gauge is applied to a boiler in a well known manner, the valves of bothheads 1 and .2 being opened so as to obtain equalization of pressure. The water in glass tube 27 is readily visible to indicate the water level inthe boiler. If the gauge should become obstructed or the glass tube 27 becomes soiled, the gauge may be readily washed out. To wash the gauge out the water valve in head 2 is first closed, valve 23 is turned into closed position so as to seat in the lower end of brass tube 16, and the steam valve of head 1 is then closed after which the water valve of head 2 is opened, peteojlr 26 being also opened. rllhis permits hot water to flow upwardly through tube 27 into head 1 then down through tube 16, valve 3 and valve stem 24 into valve casing 25 through the ports 24s. This water escapes from valve casing 25 by means of petcocl 26.V This provides simple' and efficient means whereby the gauge can be readily' washed out to remove any film or coat-ing which may collect on the inner face of glass tube 27. By having the ports 2821 of plug 28 positioned adjacent to the top of head 1, and the ports 19 of plug 18 adjacent to the bottom of this head, any sediment or otherforeignmaterials which may be deposited in head 1 will escape through tube 16. rlhis avoids, to a great extent, clouding or coating of-glass tube 27 and also eliminates danger of clogging or stoppage of this tube. After the gauge has been thoroughly washed out in the manner stated, petcoclr 26 is closed, valve 23 is opened and the steam valve of head 1 is opened, the steam and water valves being both'adjusted properly to insure best operation of the gauge. VIn the event that the inner'surface of tube 27 becomes coated with a film or covering as might occur when using water containing excessive amounts of foreign materials, it may become necessary to swab out the tube with chemicals prepared for this purpose. rlhis may be readily done by closing both the steam valve and the water valve and opening petcock 26, after which plug 29 is removed and tube 27 is swabbed out. After the tube has been properly cleaned, plug 29 is replaced andpetcock 26 is closed, the water and steam -valves being then opened to permit the water to flow into the gauge. This may be quickly and easily done without interfering to any appreciable extent with the use of the gauge or effecting its operation.
