PLUMB BOB.

My invention relates to plumb bobs, and the general object of the invention is to provide a convenient construction by which the point of the bob may be protected and out of the way when not in use. In carrying out my invention, I make the device in two separable sections, a body section and a point section, and make the point section reversible. The body section is axially chambered and one object is to provide means for lim-- iting the distance to which the point section may be inserted when the point is outward.' This makes it possible to give the device the appearance, practically, of being a single unitary structure when in use. Another object is to provide means for limiting` the distance to which the point section may be inserted when the point is directed inward. There are reasons why a solid body section is preferable to a hollow one, and with this in view I have chambered the body section only part way up from the bottom. By thus providing a stop, I prevent the point from being dulled by contact with the inner end of the chamber. Another object is to so position these stops that they will be invisible when the parts are assembled. Still another object is to provide convenient means for manipulating the parts.
I accomplish my objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing the complete device assembled ready for use. v
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the parts shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is similar to Figure l but shows the point section in reversed position.
Figure 4t shows a modification in which the point section is transversely apertured so it may be rotated by means of a nail or other lever instead of by means of a wrench as in the forms shown in Figures l to 3.
Like numerals denote like parts throughout the several views.
Referring first to the form shown in Fig` ures l to 3, inclusive, the device is made in two separate parts, the body section l and point section 2. The body section is tapered in conformity with ordinary practice, and at the top has means 3 by which it may be connected to the suspending cord 4. As such means are known and are not concerned with my present invention, no description will be necessary.
The body section is truncated at the lower end and centrally chambered from the bottom. The chamber is formed in two portions 5 and 6. The outer portion 6 is of larger diameterl and is internally threaded to take the threaded portion 7 of the point section. The latter has a pointed portion 8 at the vouter end, and by preference it is tapered in conformity with the taper of the body secton l, thus giving the semblance approximately of a single unitary structure when assembled for use. The inner portion 5 of the chamber is of reduced diameter, thus forming an annular shoulder l() against which the threaded portion abuts when the parts are assembled with the point outward. The parts are so proportioned that the shoulder 10 will also engage the tapered point section and prevent the point from contacting the inner end of the chamber. This avoids danger of screwing the point in too far and dulling it.
The threaded part 7 is flattened at l2 on opposite sides to take a wrench or other tool by which point section may be screwed in or out. The flattened part l2 also` serves to remove the said point, or to screw it in without the use of tools by just using the iingers. This facilitates the handling and unscrewing of the point.
Other means may be provided for rotating the point section, however, and in Figure 4 I have shown the point section as having transverse apertures 14 through which a nail or other lever may be inserted for the purpose.
In practice, when the bob is to be used it is assembled as shown in Figure l, the inner end ofthe point section abutting the shoulder l() and the device then having a substantially uniform taper on the outside and imparting to the device a unitary appearance. When not in use the parts are assembled as Vshown in Figure 3, and the shoulder l0 pre-v vents the point from reaching the inner end of the chamber and becoming dulled by it.
What I claim asv new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:
A plumb bob having a body section and a removable point section, the* body section 5 being axially ohambered for a portion only of its length, the point section screwing into the body section both point inward and point outward, and a stop within the chamber of the body portion for limiting the distance to which the point section may be screwed 10 when the point is inward, thus to prevent the point of the point section from contacting the inner end of the chamber of the body section.
