Be it known that I, BERNARD J. GARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to reservoir brushes and pertains particularly to a shaving brush having a soap containing compartment in the handle thereof.

The primary object of this invention is the provision, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, of a brush having a hollow handle, to set up a compartment for the storage of a soft soap, and having means whereby the contents of the handle may be forced, as desired, into the body of the brush to be worked on to the surface to which the brush is applied.

The invention contemplates the provision, of an elongated hollow receptacle having at each end thereof an inner and an outer memher. The inner members close the ends of the receptacle and one of the outer members extends beyond the end of the receptacle .and grips the base of a body of bristles. The other outer member is freely revoluble upon the receptacle body and is secured to one end of a threaded shaft which extends longitudinally through the receptacle and has its other end formed to protide a tube, the terminus of which opens into the body of bristles while the inner end thereof opens into the interior of the body. This threaded shaft carries thereon a follower member which is moved longitudinally through the body when the shaft is revolved through the revolution of the outer member carried upon the end thereof, to force out a substance into the bristles of the brush.

A further and final object of the invention is the provision, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, of a brush having a reservoir in the handle thereof, for the purpose above set forth, which may be quickly and easily disassembled or assembled, easily adjusted to force out the contents thereof, light in weight but strong and durable, neat and attractive in appearance, and inexpensive to manufacture.

The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed descriptiontaken in connection with the accompany ng drawing forming a partof this spec fication, with the understanding that the invention is not confined to any strict conformlty wlth the showing of the drawing, but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.

Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the brush embodying this invention comprises a hollow handle body 1 open at each end, internally and externally threaded upon one end as at Qand 3 respectively,'and internally'threaded upon the other end as indicated at 4. The handle body here shown is of elongated tubular form, but it is to be understood that applicant does not wish to confine himself to this construction of the body, but may change and modify the same as desired so long as such changes do not depart from the spirit of the claim.

Engaging in the threads 3 and 4 at each end of the body 1 are closure members 5 and 6 respectively, which act to close the end of the body as shown to set up the compartment 7. Each of the members 5 and 6 has formed upon the outer face thereof the wings 8 to facilitate the gripping of the closure member to revolve the same when it is desired to remove or insert the member. Each of the members 5 and 6 is centrally apertured as at 9 and 10. respectively, the aperture 10 in the member 6 being square as shown in Figure 2 and the aperture 9 in the member 5 being circular. Secured upon the inner face of each of the members 5 and 6 are flanged collars 11 and 12 respectively,

Positioned over the end of the body 1 upon which the threads 2 are formed and engaging these threads, is a bristle carrying sleeve 13 the outer and free end of winch is constricted as at 1 1 to engage about and grip the ends of a body of bristles 15. This sleeve 13 is, as shown, removable from the body 1 taking with it when removed the bristles of the brush.

Extending through the longitudinal center of the handle body 1, is a revoluble shaft 113 having the ends thereof as at 17 and 12?: respectively, the reduced end 17 being of materially greater length than the ends 18 and being of circular cross-section, and further being longitudinally bored to provlde the passage 19 the rear end of which passage extends into the main body portion of the shaft and branches at right angles to open out through the sides of the shaft, as 1ndicated at 20, into the chamber 7. This reduced end 1? extends through the collar 11 and aperture 9 of the closure member 5, and well into the body of bristles 15 as shown. '1 he shoulder formed at the point where the reduced portion 17 merges with the main body of the shaft 16 rests upon the end of the flange collar 11 as shown in Figure 1.

The reducing portion 18 upon the other end of the shaft 1'6 is of polygonal crossscction and extends through the flanged collar 12 and the polygonal aperture 10 of the closure member 6 and beyond the outer side of the closure member as shown. The shoulder formed where the polygonal reduced portion 18 merges with the main body of the shaft 16 bears against the end of the flanged collar 12 as shown. The shaft 16- between the reduced ends is threaded throu gho at.

Upon the end of the body 1 opposite the end to which the bristles are attached is a freely revoluble cap 21 having the dependent annular shirt 22 which surrounds the body 1 and snugly engages the same, and the cap further has a central polygonal aperture into which the reduced portion 18 extends, to cause the shaft. 16 to be revolved when the cap 21 is revolved. A securing screw 23 is threaded into the end of the reduced portion 18 and the head thereof bears against the cap 21 to bind the same securely upon the said reduced portion.

W'ithin the chamber 7 and surrounding the shaft 16 is a follower member 24 which fits snugly in the chamber and is in threaded engagement with the threads upon the shaft to be caused to travel back and for ward in the chamber when the shaft 16 is revolved. At diametrical opposite points, notches 25 are cut in the periphery of the follower 24, these notches having engaged therein longitudinally extending guide tracks 26 formed 11 on the inner Wall of the chamber body 2 and extending therethrough the length thereof. These guide tracks 26 hold the follower 2 1 against revolution thereby causing it to reciprocate when the shaft 16 is revolved.

From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that when the chamber 7 is filled with a substance such as soft soap or shaving soap, with the follower 24 at the rear of the chamber, that upon revolving the cap 21 the shaft will be caused to revolve in such a manner as to thread the follower down against the body of soap to force soinoof the same through the passage 19 of the reduced portion 17 and into the body of bristles 15. The soap can then be worked into a lather upon the face or where ever the lather is to be applied. It will be noted that the portion 1'2 does not extend beyond the edge of the constricted portion 14 which holds the bristles, and therefore there is no danger of injuring the skin with the end of the tubular portion referred to.

The parts of the brush are easily and quickly disassembled, the bristles being easily removable so that the closure member 5 can botaken out, or by the removal of the screw 23 the cap 21 can be taken off and the closure member 6 easily unthreaded I to open the rear end of the brush handle so that the chamber may be recharged with soap.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:

A device of the character described, comprising a cylindrical body open at both ends, end caps internally threaded into the body, a screw journalcd in one of the caps and having a spout forming a continuation thereof, said screw having a lateral by-path in its inner end registering with said spout a follower threaded on the screw and slidably engaged with said body to prevent rotation, a head telescoped over the body and having connection with the screw for the manual turning thereof, and a collar encircling the spout at the point of joinder thereof with the screw. 7
