L. J. D. HEALY PAVING BLOCK Filed May 19 192 LEON J.'D. HEALY INVENTOR A TTORNE Y Patented Apr. 20, 1926.
3 UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
LEON 'J. n. EEALY, or MILWAUKEE,
SETTS.
Application filed May 1.9, 1924. Serial No. 714,308.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON J. D. HEALY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee 5 and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paving Blocks, of which 'the following is a specification.
My 'nvention relates to paving blocks and more partcularly to such blocks formed of rubber or a rubber composition.
Blocks madeaccording to my invention while particularly adapted for use in factories, courtyards, and bridges may be ad- !5 vanta-geously used in paving streets and roadways.
The objects of'my invention will be 'evi dent from the specification and claims.
In the drawings which illustrate one embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is a perspective block.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view showlng the manner of securing the blocks view of such to the foundation and Figure 3 is a plan view further illustrating one manner of laying.
Referring to the drawin s the block, referably formed of rubber, fi er or a oomiiination of. the two of any desired degree of hardness, is indicated generally at 1.- I have illustra ted a rectangular block but it will be understood that it may take any desired shape. The block is provided along one 7 edge with a wedge shaped tongue 2, the upper face 3 of which is narrower than lower face 4. The opposite side of the block is provided with a groove 5 corresponding in shape to tongue 2.- The lower and wider face 6 of groove 5 is provided with a longitudinal recess 7 adapted to receive blind securing or anchoring means 8 as shown in Figure 2. Recess7 is positioned, as shown,
ravine BLocx.
' composition and provided on opposite edges WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE FISK RUBBER COMPANY, OF CHICOPEE FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS A CORPORATION OF MASSACHU- adj aoentthe outer edge of face 6 and so that it clears the upper edge of the block. As will be evldent the position of recess 7 permits the blocks to be quickly and accurately secured in position while the securing means are completely hidden and protected by the tongue 2 which interlocks withthe adjacent block or blocks.
The block ma be laid on any type of foundation 9 an the securing or anchoring means 8 may take any form suitable to the foundation. Where it is desirable to waterproof the pavementthe blocks are best layed 1n asphalt or common tar paving cement.
To secure a maximum interlocking action, the blocks are preferably laid in the manner shown in Figure 3 but may be arranged in any desired relation.
Having described. one form of my invention I claim:
1. A paving block formed of a rubber with complementary tongue and groove, the
lower face of the latterbeing provided with a longitudinal recess. 2. A paving block composition and provided on formed of a I rubber opposite edges with complementary tongue and groove, said v tongue and groove being so shaped that the lower face of the latter extends beyond the edge of the block and a longitudinal recess in said extended portion.
3. A pavin block comprising a body portion provide along one edge with a groove and along the opposite edge with a complemetary tongue, the lower face of saldgroove being extended beyond the upper face of the body portion, and a longitudinal recess in said extended face.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to the above specification. v v
LEON J. D. HEALY.
