UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MORGEN STERN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOP-VALVES FOR CASKS AND OTHER VESSE LS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,628, dated December 8, 1874; application filed October 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MORGEN- STERN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stop-Valves for Oasks and other Vessels, of which the following is a specification:
This invention .is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a front view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig.3 is a section of the valve-chamber in a plane parallel to the motion of the valve.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a valve-chamber, which communicates, through a hole in its bottom plate, with the interior of the cask or vessel, and which contains a valve that works against a packing-ring secured in a groove in the bottom plate, and against another packing-ring secured in the face-plate of the valve-chamber, the valve and the face-plate being provided with holes in such a manner that by turning the valve the holes in the bottom and face plates of the chamber and that in the valve can be made to coincide, and the contents of the cask or vessel are free to discharge.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a chamber, which is made of brass, iron, or other suitable material, and which is so formed that it can be readily secured to the tap-hole of a cask or barrel, or to the dischargeopening of any other vessel from which liquid is to be drawn. The face-plate a of this chamber is detachable from its body, being fastened to the same by screws, or any other suitable means, and in the bottom plate I) of said chamber is a hole, 0, which communicates with the interior of the cask or vessel. This hole is surrounded by a circular groove, which 0011- tains a packing-ring, d, and in the face-plate a is also a hole, 0, in line with the hole 0, and surrounded by a circular groove, which contains a packing-ring, f. Between the face and bottom plates of the valve-chamber is situated the valve B, the faces of which are flat, and work against the packing-rings elf. Said valve is secured to a pivot, g, which turns in the face and bottom plates of the valve-chamber, and which is provided with a head of suitable shape to receive a wrench, for the purpose of turning thevalve. In the said valve is a hole, It, and if the valve is turned to the position shown in Fig. 2 this hole coincides with the holes 0 e in the valve-chamber, and the liquid from the vessel is free to discharge.
By tightening up the face-plate of the valvechamber the faces of the valve are caused to work tight against the packing-rings tlf, and leakage past the said faces is prevented.
In the face-plate is a cam-shaped dovetailed recess, t, which is intended to receive the faucet G. This faucet is provided with a wedgeshaped bottom flange, j, and with a nipple, k, which fits the hole 6 in the face-plate of the valve-chamber. Bound this nipple is placed a packing-ring, l, and if said nipple is inserted into the hole 6, and the flange j is turned so that it catches in the canrshaped recess 2', the packing-ring l is pressed up tight against the face-plate, and a tight joint is produced. At the same time the faucet is firmly retained in position.
My valve is intended to be permanently secured to a cask or barrel, and as long as said valve is closed no liquid can discharge. 1f the barrel is to be tapped, the faucet G is secured inposition and the valve is opened.
By turning the faucet in the proper direction the liquid is permitted to discharge. If desired, the valve can be closed and the faucet removed.
If the faucet is opened, the bung of the cask must be opened, so as to admit air, and it is desirable to construct said bung so that it can be readily opened and closed by means of the same key which serves to operate the valve B.
By this arrangement the barrels or casks are preserved against injury from blows of a hammer,'and the operation of tapping can be effected with ease and facility.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The valve-chain ber A, provided with packing-rings cl f and holes 0 c, in combination with a that valve, B, working between said packingrings, and pro ided with a hole, h, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of October, 1874:-
WILLIAM MOBGENSTERN.
Witnesses W. HAUFF, 1*].13. KASTENHUBER.
