WALTER S. BRIDGES, OF GHICAGC, ILLINOIS.
FAUCET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1916.
Application filed May 26, 1915. Serial No. 30,579.
To all whom it may con ern Be it known that I, WALTER S; Bnmons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook andState of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and usefulTmprovements in'Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to faucets which are designed to deliver hot and cold water, or a mixture of both, and its object is to provide a faucetof this kind which is very simple in construction, and which can be operated to supply water to two adjacent basins, tubs or other receptacles, by mounting the faucet therebetween.
The invention also has for its object to provide a faucet which is not liable to leakage and which requires no packing washers or similar devices. j
The objects stated are attained by means of a novel combination and-arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and 'in order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to "the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of thefaucet, and Fig.2 is a horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
. in the form of a screw plug 10.
the casing is open,
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the casing or barrel of the faucet, the same being cylindrical and having-inits side two inlet ports 6 and 7, respectively, Which have suitable supply connections 8 and 9, respectively. 'One of these ports is for hot water and the other for cold water;
ttom, and to The casing is closed at the ho closure its upper end is applied a removable -Tn the; casing 5 is rotatably mounted a cylindrical valve 11 which seats between the closed end of the casing and the screw plug 10. The end of the valve cylinder whichseats on the closed end or bottom of and its opposite end has a wall 12 closing said end, From this wall 12 extends inward a tube 13 which'is located centrally within the valve cylinder and extends down as far as the open end thereof to seat against the bottomof the valve casing, this end of the tube, however, being closed. The tube 13 is integral with the wall 12, andfrom the latter "also" extends outward a tube 14 which is in line with and" communicates with the tube 13. The plug 10 has a central opening through which the tube 14 extends, and on the outside of the plug saidtube'hasan outlet spout 15. The valvecylinder 11, its'wall 12, and the tubes 13 and llsai'eall'integral."
Fro1nthe bottom of the valvecasing 5 rises an integral annular wall 16 which fits 1n the space between the inside of the valve cylinder 11 and the outside of the tube 13. Th s wall extends tothe end wall 12 and is in contact at its upper end with the inner surface of said wall.
"The valve cylinder 11 and the tube '13 have ports 17 and 18, respectively, said ports being in alinement and in the plane of the inlet ports 6 and 7. The wall 16has a port 19 located between the ports 1'? and 1S and in communication with both of said ports. The port 19 is wider 17 so that the latter port will remain in communication with the former when the valve is rotated tolbring said port opposite either inlet port. The valve cylinder also has a port 20 which is diametrically opposite the port 17, and the tube '13 has a corresponding port '21. This arrangement of double ports enables the valve to be used to supply two basins,laundry tubs or other receptacles, 22 and 23, respectively, the valve being mounted therebetween. lVhen the valve is in the full line position shown in Fig. 1, the'basin 22 will be supplied if the valve is'turned to bring the port 17 into regthan the port istry with the inlet ports 6 or? the flow being through the ports 17, 19, and 18, and from the latter into the tube 13 and out of the same through thetube laand the nozzle 15. Upon" swinging the valve to the dotted position shown' in Fig. 1, the'ports 20 and 21 are brought opposite the inlet ports and the port- 19 ,and a hot or cold water supply may be obtained by properly turning the valve to bringthe port'20 into registry with the required inlet port. A mixture of hot and cold water can also beobtained for either basin by bringing the valve ports to a position where they partly lap bothinlet ports. The valve structure, with the wall 16, effectually preventleakage, and packings, washers or similardevices' are not required.
, While the preferred embodiment of the in vention has been shown, it will be evident that various modifications may be made ,jfwithout' a departure from the spirit or scope of "the invention as claimed I claim:
