same, such as will enable others skilled in.
the art to which it pertains to make and use, the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved sign painters table.
The object is to provide a table upon which acanvas may be stretched for painting, which table is of such a character that itis capable of being extended very considerably in length or breadth and which is formed of small sections adapted to be packed within a relatively limited space.
An important advantage is the provision in a table of the character described, of a top so supported thereon as to be raised and lowered and capable of adjustment at any angle to its upright supports, and which consists of a plurality of top sections and aplurality of frame sections each section being relatively small of size. a
The above objects, together with other advantageous features of construction will more fully appear from the following description, appended claims and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective-of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation.
Fig. 3 is across-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4, Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view, taken on line 5-5, Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a rear elevation broken away showing one end extended.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional taken on line 7-7, Fig. 6.
There is a base 10 having castors 12, which base may be extended due to the use of a central section 14 which is slotted at 16 to receive bolts 18to permit separation of the end pieces 20. Each end piece 20 carries a braced upright 22 which has rollers 24 that form guides within which is mounted a standard 26. This standard is provided with opposed internal racks one view on each side of a longitudinal slot and indioated as 28. An extensible shaft 30 carrying a hand wheel 32 extends between the end pieces 22 and is provided at the end with pinions34 which engage one of the racks 28 to raise and lower the standards 26. This shaft is capable of extensiontoaccommodate any extensible movement of the end supports. in that it consists of a tubular shaft member 31 and an inner shaft member 29 telescoped within the, tube and adapted to be secured thereto to rotate therewith by a bolt 83 extending through the apertures 27. There is a central support extendingup from the base 10 indi-- cated as 36.
To retain the standards at adjusted posi tions of elevation I provide a locking member or dog 38 pivoted at 40 to the end piece 22 and held by a spring 42 to engage in one of the racks 28, thereby retaining the standard to any position to which it has been raised. There is a flexible connection such as a chain 44 extending between the dogs 38 through guides 46 andterminating in atrip 48 whereby the dogs may be withdrawn to permit movement of the standards.
Pivoted to each standard is atransverse support 50. This carries a plate 52 which ispivoted at 54 to the standard. The plate is slotted at 56 and atightening bolt 58 havinga hand nut 60 extends through the slot and is adapted to hold the support 50 at adjusted angular positions. i
The table top together with its skeleton frame-work consists of a plurality of relatively small sections. 62 which extend across from one transverse support 50 to the other. Each of these stringers is built up of a plurality of overlapping sections bolted together as shown in Fig. 1. Each transverse support carrles an angle iron plate 64 slotted at 66 to receive bolts 69 carried by stringers and thumb nuts 68 are provided on the bolts so that the stringers are. securely releasably held to the transverse supports 50. u
The table top proper comprises a plurality of top sections 74. Eachtop section has guide members 70 which extend along opposite sides of the stringer 62. These guide members 70 carry turn buttons 72 mounted.
I' provide stringers cured at each end in the manner set forth to the stringers. Each top section carries an additional guide member 76 spaced from the guide member 70 so as to receive there between supplemental stringers 78, which stringers are held in place by turn buttons 80 carried by bolts 81. These supplemental stringers 78 carry supplemental top sections 7 5. plurality of short overlapping sections secured together by bolts 7 9. There is a supplemental transverse support 82 which is engaged over the stringers 78 and carries one part of a hinge 84 which is secured by a hinge pin 86 to a co-operating hinge part 88 carriedby a leg 90 a'djustably mounted Within a forked brace 92 so as to support the ex tended end of the top. Extensions 94 are provided for the transverse supports 50,
being secured detachably thereto by bolted straps 96 to increase the width of the top.
What I claim is:
1. In a table of the character described,
a portable base having uprights provided with transverse supports, stringers detachably secured to said supports, top sections removably receivable upon said stringers having guides extending therealong, turn buttons carried by the guides adapted to be looked over said stringers to fasten the top sectionsfto the stringers, additional guideson said top sections, extension stringers receivable between said last named guides and the stringer guides, means for releasably fastening said extension stringers in position between sa d guides, supplemental top sections detachably fastened to said ex tensionstringers, a transverse brace detachahly fastened to said extension stringers, and a leg support detachably hinged to said transverse brace; i
2. In a table of the character described,
' a portable base having uprights at the ends provided with transverse supports, an'extension top removably mounted upon said transverse supports comprising stringers detachably secured thereto, a' plurality of top sections detachably secured to said stringers, strin er extensions consisting of a plurality of pieces having overlapping ends detach- These stringers 78 are made up of a 3. In a table of the character described, a 7
base having end standards provided with transversesupports, a top reinovably secured to said supports comprising stringers con'- sisting of a plurality of overlapping pieces detachably fastened together detachably fas tened to said transverse supports, a plurality of top sections removably receivable upon said stringers, V said top sections having guides extending'along said stringers provided 1th means engageable thereovei' to' secure the top sections thereto,-additional guides on said top sections spacedfrom the first guides, stringer extensionsremovably secured between said firstn-amed guides and additional guides, supplemental top sections provided with guides detachably fastened to said stringer extensions, extensions'detachably fastened to said transverse supports, supplemental stringers detachably secured to said last named extensions, and supple mental top sections reinovably secured to said supplemental stringers. i
4. In a table of the character described, a portable base having upright ends provided with roller guides, rack standards mounted y within said guides, a shaft extending flee tween said ends provi ded with pinions engaging said rack standards to raise and lower them within the guides, releasable locking members held to engage saidracks to retain the standards at adjusted elevations, transverse supports pivoted te -said standards for angular adjustment, stringers detachably mounted upon said supports, top sections removably secured to saidstringers, supplemental stringers detachablyf secured as extensions to the'fir'st named stringers, supplemental top sections detachably secured to said supplemental stringers, and removable leg supports for said supplemental top sections.
'5. In a table of thecharacter described, a portable base having upright end pieces 'provided with guides, a standard liavingopposed internal racks mounted within each end guide, a shaft extending'between said endguides provided at each end withya pinion engaging onetofsaidracks to raise and lower the standards, a locking member mounted upon each end guide held under sp 'ing'tension to engagein the oppositerack of the standard to retain "the standard at adjusted elevations, a connection between said locking members terminating in'a trip pedal at the base Wherebythe locking mem bers may be released, transverse supports pivoted to said standards adapted to be looked at adjusted angular positions, stringers detaehably secured to said supports, top sections having guides receivable alongside said stringers, turn buttons carried by said guides engageable Over the stringers to secure the top sections thereto, additional guides on said top sections, stringer extensions receivable between said guides, supplemental top sections removably receivable 10 upon said extensions, extensions for said transverse supports detachably secured thereto, removable stringers for said extensions, and removable top sections for said stringers.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification. I
GEORGE R. COLE.
