ci'ence being had to the accompanying dra-wings, which are a part of this specification.

This inventionrelatesto certain new and useful'improvements in loose leaf binders and has as a general object the simplification of devices of this character.

Another object of this invention resides in the provision ofan improved. loose leaf binder in which the-shifting of one ofthe binder heads effects the connecting of the heads'to clamp the loose leaves therebetween. A further object of thisinve-ntion resides in the provision of a loose leaf binder in which added tension may be applied to the leaves between'the binder heads, after the heads have been locked together, by rotation of the binder posts.

And a still further object of this invention resides in the provision 'of improved means for preventing the accidental loosening of the connection between the binder heads and the provision of means for facilitating the application of added tension after the binders have been connected.

With the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel con.

and more particularly defined by the ap-` struction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described pended claims, -it being understood that such changes., in' the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, I have ili lustrated two complete examples of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according-to the 'best modes I have so far devised for-the practical application ofthe principles-thereof and in which:

Each post 8 in that forni of my inventionillustrated in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, is

formed in twoys'ections 1 4 and 15 hingedly connected, as at 16, to permit the movement of t-he section 15 froma position forming a continuation of the section 14 to a position at right angles thereto. The section 14 of each binderpost is extensible, being formed of sections 1'7 and 18. connected by a relatively long, reduced threaded shank 19 carried by one section and threaded in the bore of the next o'r adjacent section, there being-as many sections as required to accommodate the body of leaves 7.

The section 14 is provided with onev or more grooved or `reduced portions 20 adjacent its pivot `16 for engagement in the reduced portion 21'of a key-hole slot formed in the `adjacent end of the upper binder tions 20 andthe lower binder head is set to approximately that 4ofthe thickness of ico the body of leaves by the addition or r'elVith the large portions 22 of th'e keyholc slots in alignment with the posts, the upper binder head is pressed down to engage the leaves and thenshifted sidevvise, when the grooved portions 2O of the posts are in .register vvith the key-hole slot, to engage Ithe reduced portions of the post in the smaller 'portions of the kcy-holexslots.

The upper binder head may be locked against accidental shifting to register the large portions offthe key-hole slots with the posts and consequently release the-pressure thereon, by a member 23 pivotally mounted Aon the upper binder head adjacent one key-hole slot and provided, With a curved portion 24 on its end adjacent the key-hole slot for engagement behind -the adjacent binder post-after the reduced. portion thereof has been engaged in the reduced portion of the key-hole slot. The end of the pivoted member opposite -its curved portion 24: has a upstanding finger engaging member 25 formed thereon which serves to prevent accidental movement of the member 30 on its' pivot when the hinged lsection 15 of the adjacent post is swung i-nto -th`e upper binder head. The section A15 when folded into the upper binder head providesa stop .preventing the inward` movement of the end 25 `of the member 23 that is necessary to disengage the end 211 of thev pivoted member from the'path of the adjacent post.

After the binder heads have been secured `in the positions illustrated in Figure 1 and the sections 15 of the posts folded into the pocket or recess of the upper binder head, the posts and the, locking element are' oo ncealed by a hinged cove-r 26. The cover 26 is provided With one or more yieldablel fingers 27 which bearon the sections 15 of the posts When the kcover `is secured closed by one or more readily releaseable latch.` members 28 and effect the quick opening of the cover when the latches 28 are disengaged from their'locking recess 29. Each latch membei 28 is medially pivoted in the adjacent end of .the upper binder head, as at 28, and pivotally connected therewith, as at 29', is a push' button 30 which projects and x' is spring urged ,outwardly of lthe binder j head end byv a spring 31.

`In Figures 4; and '5, a. slightly modified lform of my`invention is illustrated in which the posts 8 are formed of a pluralityv of threadedly connect-ed extension without'provisions for the folding of that portion ofthe posts extended above the npper head. In thisform of my invention, that portion of the posts extending beyond the combined thickness of the binder heads and leaves projeet above `the upper binder head and the reduced portions 20 of the posts maybe for'med in the sections .or by spacing adjacent extension sections, in the manner illustratedin Figure '4.

'The extension sections are not tightly drawn together so that added tension is applied tothe leaves When the extension .sections are drawn together by rotation of the posts to take up any spacebetween the sections. The stops 32, in lthis form of my sections sie invention provide the leverage `for shortening the posts and also prevent the accidental removal of the upper head from the posts.

`What I claim as my invention is: I

1. A loose leaf binder, comprising a pair of binder heads, a binder post vcarried by one head and having a groove therein, the binder post being engageable 'through a keyhole slot in the other binder head and shifting of said other binder head to engagethe izo groove ofthe post in the small portion of i l thelkey-hole slot locking the binder heads Leraeea together7 and means for applying a tension on the binder post after the binder heads are connected.

2. Aloose leaf binder, comprising a pair of binder lheads, a binder post including,Y hinged sections, one of the sections thereof beingl connected with one binder head and passed through a lrey-hole slotin the other, said other section being oldable to lie within the other binder head, and the postl section connected With the irstementioned binder head having reduced portion whereby said other binder head may be shifted to engage the reduced portion of said post section in the small portion of the key-hole slot to secure the binder heads togcther.

A loose leal binder, eoniprisinxgr a pair of binder heads, a. binderpost including hinged sections, one of the sections thereof being connected With one binder head and passed through a key-hole slot in the other, said other section being oldable to lie Within the other binder head, and the post seetion connected with the rst-mentioned binder head having a reduced portion whereby said -other binder head may be shifted to engage the reduced portion*l of said post section in the small portion of the key-hole slot to secure the binder heads t0- gether, and means engageable behind 'the binder post when the reduced portion thereof is 'engaged in the small portion of the key-IV hole slot to secure said other binder head against shitting and consequently lock the binder heads together.
