This invention relates to improvements in loose leaf binders,'and more particularly to binders capable `of being used either singly or in conjunction with telescopic binder covers, and has for its principalobject to provide a simple and durable device of the character described, economical in manufacture and capable of being or detached. Referring now to details showny in the drawings, Figures 1, 2 and 3 show my inventionas applied to a binder, indicated the binding post in secgenerally at 10, and including a top cover 11 and bottom cover 12 having telescopic end portions 11 and 12?, respectively, forming the back of the binder. A fiange 13 is xed to the back portionV 11a of the uppei` cover and extends inwardly, substantially at` right angles thereto, and immediately beneath the cover portion 11 when the latter is in closed position, as clearly shown in Figures l and 2; This ange is preferably rigid with respect to the back portion 11, in the preferred form shown in Figure 2, this 192e. serial No. 112,782.

Theconstruction of these bindingl posts are well understoo be shown in detail.
Referring now to the binding posts formingone of the important features of my invention, Vthe binder shown rin Figure 1 is provided with a centrally disposed binding post which is shown in greater detail in Figures 2, 3 and 7. This device consists of a tubular base member 20 extending through the bottom strip 16 and having Va flanged end 2l engaging the under face of` said strip. A cylindrical locking piece 22 extends downwardly through the istrip 13 and is provided with a head 23 whichengages the upper surtions26 and 25 are formed by threading tlioiri respective members, althoughl it be understood that tether-forms of serration may be used if desired.` Y l A locking pin 30 is mounted by longitudinal movementwithin'the cylindric sleeve 22 and is arranged so that its lower end engages a disposed shoulder 31-31` in said sleeve so as to spread the same into locking engagement when thepin is pushed to its innermost position, as shown in the several figures. Said pin 30 is provided with an enlarged head 31, by which saidk pin may tallic piece 15 forming an inward extending d and need not be manipulated in locking or unlocking ythe device.
Two modified forms of devices for retaining the locking cylinder 2Q and p'in3`0 in place, are shown in the figures. In Figures 1, 2 and 3, in which the binding post is used in connection with the binder covers 11 and 12 as described, a strip` 35, preferably ofnietahnis secured adjacent its opposite ends to the upper surface of' the binder flange 13. VThis strip is provided adjacent its center portion with aslot `36 having an enlarged end 37. Said enlarged end portion 37 is of suflicient dia-meter to permit the main body of the locking, pin'30 to extend therethrough, but the reduced-slot 36 is of smaller dimensions so that when finally in assembled position, as shown in Figure 3, the strip 35 is placed between head 31 of pin 3() and flange 23 of cylinder 22, so that upward movement of pin 30 will be limited by a shoulder 33 which engages the restricted slot 36` in strip VPin 3() is provided with a restricted portion 34 between shoulder 33 and head 31 so that the device may be readily assembled in the following manner. Before the retaining strip 35 is Secured to the upper flange or strip 13, pin 30 is put through the enlarged aperture 37 until the reduced portion 34 of said pin registers with the reduced slot- 36 in said strip, as shown in Figure 5. The pin is then shifted laterally sothat the reduced portion 34 enters the slot 3G and the pin and strip are then secured tothe binder flange 13 as shown in Figure 3.
In the modified form of binding post shown in Figures 7 and 8, the post is especially designed for use without the binder covers, andtofthis end, a retaining piece 40, similar in function to the strip 35, but in the form of a disc, is` secured by; crimping the' same over the edges of the upper flange 23 of locking sleeve 22, as shown. In other respects, the parts of the binding post are the same. v v
In connection with all of theY forms of binding post described, an auxiliary sleeve 41 may be provided to slip over the outside of the base member 20, but applied from the upper side of the loose leaves, as shown in Figures 3 and 7. v
The use and operation of my improved device are now understood. l ien assem.- bled in the manner hereinabove described, it will be seen that the pin 30lias vertical movement limited by strip l35, or equivalent disc 40, but sufficient to withdraw the lower end to unlock Vthe threaded end of cylinder 22 from the base 20, and permit detachment 'of the binding post. lVhen the post is to be again locked, the cylindric locking memberv 22 isinserted; inbase 20 and may be locked inany vertical position `relative thereto by forcing the head 3l downwardly, causing the split end of t-he cylinder 22 to be spread into locking position. It will further be observed in connection with the forms shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, that theV head 31 will be maintained in locking position by the cover 1l. when the latter is held in closed position, so that it is impossible to unlock the device unless the cover 1l is open. l j n .Although I have shown and described the. particularv embodimentof my invention, it will be understood and I do not wish to be limited to the constructions shown and cescribed, but that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spi-rit and scope of my invention., I claim as my invention: j y 1. A binding post consisting of two parts detachable by expanding and contracting one of said parts within the other, vthe expanding part having a. flanged portion at one end thereof, an expanding pin operativey ly disposed within said partandY provided with av head projectingabove said flanged portion, and an enlarged partspaccd vertically below said head, and a securing piece interposed between said flanged portion and said head, said piece having a restricted opening permitting limited vertical movement of saidpin.

4. A binding post including two detachably connected telescopic parts, one of Vsaid parts having av laterally extending leaf-retaining member, a. longitudinally,movable pin operative for locking and unlocking said l 0 parts having a head disposed above said retaining member and an enlarged part spaced vertically below said head, and means for securing and limiting the movement of said locking member relative to the part on which it is Carried, comprising a piece having a` slot of varying width whereby the enlarged part of said pin may pass only through the larger part of said slot, said piece being secured over the edge of said retaining flange in position with said pin passing through a smaller part of the slot.
5. In a loose lea-f binder, a pair of oppositely disposed retaining members, a binding post including two telescoping parts each connected with one of said retaining members, means for detachably Lconnecting said telescoping parts including a longitudinall movable locking member extending throng one of said retaining members and its respective telescopic part, and havinga head extending above said retaining member, and means for securing and limiting the movement of said locking member relative to said retaining member, comprising a piece fixed relative to said retaining member and interposed between the same and said head, said piece having a restricted opening permitting limited vertical movement of said locking member.
6. In a binder, a pair of oppositely disposed retaining members, a binding-post consisting of two telescoping parts each connected with one of said retaining members, means for detachably connecting said telescoping parts including a longitudinally movable member extending through one of said retaining members, and a cover flexibly connected to, and adapted to fold over said last named retaining member and ,retain said movable member in locked position when said cover is in closed position.
7. In a loose-leaf binder, a pair of L- shaped pieces adapted to fit in telescoping relation to form the back of the binder, and with inwardly extending portions adapted to form retaining members for opposite sides of the leaves to be bound, a telescoping bindl ing post having two parts each connected to one of said retaining members, means for detachabl connecting said parts including a longitu inally movable member extending through one of said retaining members, andV a cover flexibly connected to the last-named retaining member and foldable over the latter to maintain said longitudinally movable member in locked position when said cover is closed.
