CHARLES n. noon, or' ASHLAND, KENTUCKY.`
JOINT COMPLETING OlR. GRGOVING'TOOL.
Application filed January 8, 1925. Serial No. 1,276.
To all who/m, t may concern.'
lle it known that I, CHARLES H. Hoon, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county ot Boyd and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joint Completing or Grooving Tools; and l do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled .in the art to which' it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tools for com-` pleting or grooving;` the joints of sheet metal plates, and has for one of its objects to improve and simplify the genera-l construction ot tools oit' this character and to provide one by means of which joints ot' various widths may be completed or grooved.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists ot the construction, combination and arrangement ot parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing', wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a joint completing or grooving tool constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a view in edge elevation of the tool,
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 3-'3 ot Figure 1,
Figure a is a detail sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 4 4 ot Figure l, and
Figure 5 is a. view illustrating` the condition ot the joint of two metal plates prioir to its completion by the tool.
Referring to the drawing' by reference numerals, 1 designates the handle and 2 the head of the tool. The lower end 5% of the handle 1 is enlarged and projecting; downwardly trom opposite sides o'f this end is a. pair of rela-tively spaced lugs -l to and between which the head 2 is removably secured. The head 2 is preferably polygonal in outline and in the edges thereof are formed grooves 5, 6, 7 and 8 ot relatively different widths. Thehead 2 is removably secured to and between the lugs a by means of balls 9 which are carried by the head and which partly enter openings 10 in the lugs. The head 2 is provided with 'an opening 11 extending' transversely therethrough and located at. the transverse center thereof. The opposite ysides of the head 2 `are provided with circular grooves 12 which surround the opening 11. The inner walls ot the grooves: 12 are dciiected inwardly to provide ball retaining` elementsrl, these elements being adapted to limit the projection ot the balls beyond the opposite sides ot the head 2, and the balls are yieldingly held in lContact with the retaining` elements by means ot the spring' 14C positioned 1n the opening 11 between the balls 9. The projecting portions of the balls 9 enter the epenings 10 in the lugs 4;. As the balls are yieldingly held in projected position, the head 2 may be removed 'from the handle 1 or applied thereto by exerting thereon a force .sutlicient to overcome the tension ot the spring 14. To facilitate the application of the head 2 to the handle 1, the lugs l are provided in their inner sides with grooves 15 which are located below the openings l() and in alinement therewith andthe bottom walls of which extend upwardly and inwardly. The lower end of the handle 1 is provided with a :rib 16 which enters the top Y moved into interlocking; engagement as shown ,in Figure ot the drawing', in which figure A. and B designate the plates and A and B the flanges. To finish the joint, the tool is applied to the upper sides ot the sheets with the interlocked flanges A and l within one of the `fsr'ooves of the head 2. With the tool in this position, the application ot a downward pressure thereto will result in completingthe joint as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing'. As the grooves 5 ot the head 2 are ot relatively di'flerent widths, the tool may be used to complete ioints oft different widths. The head 2 may bereadily and quickly applied to and removed from the handle 1 in order 'to position the groove to be used at the lower side ot the head.
It. should be understood that the drawing is merely illustrative and does not pretend to give exact proportions. Furthermore. the said drawing illustrative,r of a prefel-red construction, it beingniy expectation thatyarifos changes and. mo'difcatieJ-i's may be made Without departing from thespirit and scope of my inyention.
Vhat is claimed iS: Y
1. A joint completing` .or grooving tool, comprising a. handle provided with lugs, a head provided with joint receiving grooves, retractible means carried by the head and vengaging the lugs .to secure thev head to the vlugs,` anda rib casrried loy the handle and .contacting with the, bottom` wall of one ont' the grooves to hold thehead against rotation and movement' in the-direction ofthevhandle.
outwardly from the openings and having inclined bottom'walls, a head provided with joint receiving grooves, spring-pressed elements carriedzby ,the head and partly entering the openings, and aI rib carried by the handle and engaging the bottom wall of one of the. grooves.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signatuire.
CHARLES H. HOOD.
