Description

(No Model.) W. E'OWLER.
A HATGEBT. No. 414,692. Patented Nov. 12, 1889l N. Pains mwmmgnpw, www 0.@
UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
IVIIIIIIAM lFOLER, OF MILTON, DELAIVARE.
HATCH ET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,692, dated November 12, 1889. Application filed Apn'l 16, 1889. Serial No. 307,482. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FOWLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of Sussex and Statecf Delaware, have invented a new and useful Hatchet, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hatchets; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of a hatchet constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2is a perspective view of the same.
Myimproved hatohet is provided with the usual hammer-head A and the eye B for the reception of the handle, and on the inner or rear edge of the hatchet, I form the elongated lugs C, which bear against the sides of the handle and clasp the same, so as to re-enforce and strengthen it at the point Where the greatest strain is applied thereto. Below these 1n gs C and on the rear edge of the blade D, I forni the rearwardly-projecting claws E E, which are adapted to engage the head of a nail to facilitate the extracting of the saine. Upon reference to Fig. 2 it will be observed that these claws are arranged re versely to each other, so as not to impair the strength of the hatchet, and the inner faces of the sides of the claws are inclined, so that they will readily engage under the head of the nail.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the advantages of my improved hatchet will loe readily understood. The lugs C effectually re-enforce the handle, so as to prevent the same breaking off close to the head, and the claws E facilitate the rapid extraction of nails without the use of a separate tool. Vv'hen extracting nails, the hammenhead serves as a fulcrum and the hatchet is swung at right angles to the plane of the blade, thereby applying great pressure to the nail and extracting the same easily and rapidly. Inasmuch as the blade is provided with two claws E, which are arranged reversely to each oth er, a nailcan he very easily extracted, as one claw can be used to partially extract the nail and the other claw then brought into play without reversing the blade to complete the extraction.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim, and desire to secure byLet-ters Patent,
A hatchet having the adjacent reverselyarranged claws formed on and projecting from its rear edge, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature. in presence of witnesses.
XVILLIAM FWLER.
