E. J. R. BEATTEY OPTHALMIC MOUNTING Filed Nov. 22. 1922 Patented Dec. 22, 1925.
UNITED STATES 1,566,361. PATENT OFFICE.
EARLE J. R. BEATTEY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO UNIVERSAL OPTICAL CORPORATION, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, A CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND.
OPHTHALMIC MOUNTING.
Application filed November 22; 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARLE J. R. BEATTEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ophthalmic Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to ophthalmic mountings, and more particularly to nose guards. The object of the invention is to provide a nose guard constituted of nonmetallic material that shall have a more secure gripping action than is obtainable withguards of this type at present in use.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in connection, with an Oxford mounting shown in Fig. 1; Fig.- 2 is an enlarged view of a guard constructed according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, shown attached to a lensreceiving rim; Fig. 3 is a section taken upon the line 33 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows; and Fig. 4 is a view of a preferred gripping insert, prior to its incorporation into the guard.
Metal guards are not very difiicult to deal with, because they can be readily bent, with pliers, to conform exactly to the shape of the nose. Guards constituted of non-metallic material, like celluloid, zylonite and shell, can not be adjusted in this manner, with the consequence that either they happen to fit properly, or else they do not hold very securely in place. This is particularly true of guards like those illustrated at 2, provided upon the lens-receiving rims 4 that are integrally connected by a resilient bridge 6 of the Oxford type of ophthalmic mounting. Each guard 2 is constituted of a small sheet of non-metallic material, and is cemented or otherwise integrally secured to a rim 4' along an edge 8 of the guard, so as to be flush with the front face of the rim. The guard is provided with a comparatively large gripping face, as shown. It will seldom happen, therefore, that it will conform exactly to the nose of the wearer, so that portions will engage the nose, and portions will not, with the result that a very insecure grip is obtained upon the sides of the nose.
It is found that a much more secure gripping effect will be obtained by providing.
the guard with an additional gripping ma- Serial No. 602,622.
terial, like sharks skin. To retain the pleasing appearance of the non-metallic material, the sharks skin is applied to but a comparatively small portion of the guard, in a comparatively small recess 10. To hold the sharks skin in place, the recess may bebevelled, as shown at 12, Fig. 3, and the small sheet ofsharks skin may be correspondingly beveled, as shown at 14. The sharks skin is in this manner very easily secured in place in the recess, substantially flush with the face of the guard, and it is effectively retained in place by the beveled walls 12.
It will be obvious that the invention is not. restricted to the exact embodiment thereof that is herein illustrated and described, but that itmay be modified by persons skilled in the art. tions are considered to be within the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. A guard for an ophthalmic mounting comprising a sheet of'non-metallic material having a gripping face provided with a recess, and additional gripping material in the recess, the additional gripping material being of different character from the nonmetallic material of the sheet to facilitate gripping action.
2. A guard for an ophthalmic mounting comprising a sheet of non-metallic material having a comparatively large gripping face provided with a comparatively small recess, and an additional sheet of gripping material seated in the recess substantially flush with the gripping face of the guard, the ad ditional gripping material being of different character from the non-metallic material of the sheet to facilitate gripping action.
3. An ophthalmic mounting comprising a lens-receiving rim and a guard integrally connected together along an edge of the guard and constituted of non-metallic material, the guard having a gripping face provided with a recess, and additional gripping material in the recess, the additional gripping material being of different charactor from the non-metallic material of the guard to facilitate gripping action.
4:. An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, two lens-receiving rims, a bridge connecting the rims, and a guard connected to each rim along an edge of the Such modificaguard, and all integrally connected together and constituted of non-metallic material, each guard comprising a sheet of nonmetallic material having a comparatively large gripping face provided with a comparatively small recess, and an additional sheet of gripping material seated in the recess of each guard substantially flush with the gripping face of the guard, the additional gripping material being of different character from the non-metallic material of the sleet to facilitate gripping action.
A guard for an ophthalmic mounting having a gripping race provided With a recess the Walls of which are bevelled, and an additional sheet of gri aping material retained in the recess by the bevelled Walls, the additional ripping material being oi' diil'erent charm/L r from the non-metallic material of the guard to facilitate gripping action.
6. A guard for an ophthalmic mounting comprising a sheet of non-metallic material having a gripping l ace provided With a llat-bottoi red recess the Walls of Which are bevelled inwardly -from the flat bottom towards the ipping face, and an additionsheet of gripping material seated in the recess in contact With the flat bottom and substantially flush with the gripping face,
the additional gripping material being retained in the recess by the bevelled Walls, and being of different character from the nonmetallic material of the sheet to facilitate gripping action.
7. An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, tWo lens-receiving rims and a bridge connecting the rims disposed in sub stantially a common plane, and tWo guards, the rims, the bridge and the guards being all integrally connected together and constituted of non-metallic mate-rial, each guard comprising a sheet of non-metallic material connected to a rim an edge of the d and extending beyond the plane of he rims to provide a comparativeiy lar e gripping face, each sheet being provided With a com-par rely small recess, and an additienal SllGQro-i gripping material seated n the recess of each guard substantially flush With the gripping face of the guard, the additional gripping material b oi different character from the non- -erial oi the guard sheet to fagripping action. stimony thereof, 1 have hereunto subscribed my name this 16th day of Nd vember, 1922.
