P. STERN 7 SUN SHIELD Filed April 16. 1925 Patented Oct. 13, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SUN SHIELD.
Application filed April 16, 1925. Serial No. 23,522.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL STERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and the State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sun Shields, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sun shield or eye shade or the like and has for its main object the provision of such a device that may be conveniently carried and worn when desired particularly at base ball games or other out-door events. A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character specified of simple, inexpensive form and of light weight.
WVith the above and other objects in view, as might hereinafter appear, there is provided a sunshield made of card board or any other suitable opaque material provided with means for convenient attachment to the hat or cap of the wearer, the shield being designed to be conveniently folded.
For. a complete understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the follow ing detailed description and to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a side view of the shield in position on a hat;
Fig. 2 is a top view of the shield in position on a hat;
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the shield in flat extended position; and
Fig. 4L is a perspective view of the shield in folded position.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 10 designates the shield generally. This shield or shade 10 comprises a central or intermediate section 11 which consists of two portions 11 and 11 foldable along the line 12 and cut out at 18 for adapting the same to fit the forehead or the crown of the hat or the like of the wearer. At the sides of the central section 11 are end or wing members l t and 15. These wing members 14: and 15 have slots 16 and 17 to permit of the convenient attachment of the shield to the brim of a hat 18 or other head covering, as shown by Figs.
1 and 2. These slots 16 and 17 are preferably positioned adjacent to the ends of the central section 11. The wings let and 15 are preferably formed integrally with the intermediate section 11 and are foldably associated therewith along the lines 19 and 20 respectively.
To secure the shield in position, there is provided an attaching band 21 secured to the shield 10 by staples or the like 22. This attaching band 21 may be of any specific construction. As shown by Figs. 1 and 2, the band surrounds the crown of thehat, but itwill be obvious that it may also be positioned about the head of the wearer or about any head covering.
As shown by Fig. 4, when the shield is not worn, it may be folded into the compact form illustrated. For the purpose of disclosing the invention I have shown a specific construction which is considered the preferred form, but it will be understood that certain changes in the construction and details of the shield may be made without departing from the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letso ters Patent of the United States is:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a central section having a cut-out portion, and two wing members, said central section and wing members having slots therebetween for attaching the shield to a head covering substantially as shown and described.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a central section and two wing members connected thereto, each of said wing members having a cut-out portion for attaching the device to a head covering substantially as shown and described.
3. A device of the kind described com- 95 prising a sheet of suitable material having a central cut-out portion and a slot on each side of said central cut-out portion substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
PAUL STERN.
