IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR DRVING YARN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,285, dated September 22, 1874; application filed February 28, 1874.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BROOK, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented/an Improvement in Machine for Drying Yarn, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of certain improvements, as hereinafter described, in machines for drying yarn while in the hank, in which the hanks are suspended on rollers, and are kept continually turning over and over while being conveyed at a slow rate of speed through a heating-chamber supplied with steampipes, the object in thus revolving the yarn being to more effectually dry it by preventing the water or dampness from settling at the lower ends, or at any one portion of the banks.

The heatingchamber A, whichconsists of a rectangular-shaped box, is provided in the bottom with a series of steam-pipes, B B B, and has its ends O C cut partially away for the dependent ends of the yarn to pass through. The rollers D D, from which the banks are suspended, are arranged transversely at the upper part of the heating-chamber, with their journals e e resting upon longitudinal bars F and F. The ends of the journals c e project beyond the bearingbars and engage with the thread of two horizontal screws, G and G. These screws and the bearing-bars F and F are made ot' increased length, so as to extend a suitable distance beyond the ends of the heating-chamber, to allow the. rollers containing the yarn to be placed in position on the bars on the outside before passing through the chamber, and to remain on the bars after they emerge from the opposite end of the chamber. The extremities of the screws G and G are supported in proper bearings H H, secured to and projectingi'rom the ends of the boXA. The thread of one of the said screws is formed in a left-hand direction, and the thread of the other in a right-hand direction, both being provided with pinions I and I', which are geared with right and left hand worms J and J on the transverse shaft K. Motion is communicated to the shaft K through a pulley, L, or any other suitable device, and the Worms and pinions are so geared as to revolve the two screws in such a direction as to propel the rollers at.

The rollers D D I) are also provided on one or both ends with a pinion, M, which engages with a rack or racks, N, secured to or formed on the sides of the bearing-bars F F, the object of which is to insure a positive rotary movement of the rollers while they are being propelled forward by the screws G and G.
It is obvious that a multiplication of rollers may be used, and as many hanks placed upon them as will occupy their entire length.
Each row of hanks as they pass through in succession and occupy the openings O O in the ends of the heating-chamber A, as shown in Fig. l, will obstruct the said openings and to a certain extent prevent the loss of heat.
Vhat I claim as my invention is- The combination, in a heating-chamber for drying yarn, of two longitudinal right and left hand screws, G and G, bearing-bars F and F', rolls D, rack N, and pinions M, arranged and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
