TEETHING RING.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DENNIS E. HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Faribault, in the county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new in Teething Rings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same.

Practically all teething rings are so constructed that when the infant bites upon one, pressure is merely exerted on the edges of the gums, but it is highly desirable that the inner and outer sides of the gums be massaged, in order that teething may be accomplished with the minimum of pain and difiiculty. It is hence the object of my invention to provide a novel form of teething ring in which novel provision is made for massaging the inner and outer sides of the gums, as well as exerting pressure on the edges thereof.

lVith the foregoing in View, the invention resides in the novel subject matter here-- inafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.

In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a preferably flat-sided body which, in the present embodiment of the invention, is provided with a plurality of lateral lugs 2 of a size to be readily received in an infants mouth, each lug preferably having a concave edge 3. Near this edge, each lug 2 is formed with a pair of rather deep transverse channels 4 to receive the upper and lower gums, and the lug is provided across the open side of each channel, with a plurality of integral lugs or projections 5 which are preferably pointed and disposed in the staggered relation shown in Fig. 1. The gums must first engage these projections 5, before they completely enter the channels 4:. Consequently, the projections in question will yield and massage the inner and outer sides of the gums, and when the latter come in contact with the bottoms of the channels, pressure is of course exerted on the edges of the gums. By combining pressure on the edges of the gums, with massaging of the inner and outer sides of the gums, the teething operation is greatly facilitated and the pain is materially lessened.

Any desired resilient material may be used in the manufacture of the device, but rubber is preferably employed. It will also be observed that the device may be provided in numerous forms other than that shown herein, for the purpose of illustration.

I claim 1. A teething ring comprising an elastic body having a channel to receive a babys gum, and a plurality of elastic gum-massaging lugs projecting inwardly from opposite sides of said channel and overhanging said channel for massaging the inner and outer sides of the gum.

2. A teething ring comprising an elastic body having a channel to receive a babys gum, and a plurality of elastic gum massaging lugs projecting inwardly from opposite sides of said channel for massaging the inner and outer sides of the gum, said lugs being pointed and being disposed in staggered relation.
