UNITED STATES VENIE A. Isaac, on WALNUT, IOWA.
NURSING BOTTLE.
Application filed March 6, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VENIE A. ISAAC, a citizen of the United States, residing at WValnut, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursing Botties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to nursing bottles and has for its primary object to vent the same to insure a flow of the contents therefrom when the infant is nursing and to prevent waste of the food.
The invention furthermore precludes the collapsing of the nipple and the entrance of air into the stomach of the infant which is productive of colic and other disorders resulting in discomfort both to the infant and nurse.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
lVhile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure 1 is a. side view of a nursing bottle having a closing cap fitted t0 the vent opening,
Figure 2 is .a view similar to Figure 1 of a different form of bottle and nipple, having a Vent cap fitted to the vent opening,
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional detail of the portion of the bottle having the vent opening and the closing cap fitted thereto, and
Figure 4 is a. view similar to Figure 3, having the vent cap fitted to the vent openin Corresponding and like arts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
Serial No. 623,223.
The numeral 1 designates the body of the bottle which may be provided with a breast nipple 2 or a stalk nipple, said bottle being provided with graduations and of any preferred form. A vent opening at is provided in a side of the bottle'near the bottom thereof and a collar 5 projects outwardly from the bottle in line with the vent opening and is externally screw threaded. The vent opening & may be sealed by means of a. closing flap 6, but when the bottle is in active service for feeding the infant, the closing cap 6 is replaced by a vent cap 7 which is preferably of rubhe and fitted to the collar 5, said vent caphaving one or more vent openings 8 to admit air into the bottle as the contents are drawn therefrom. A retaining ring 9 confines the vent cap 7 to the collar 5 so as to prevent displacement thereof. The form of bottle preferred has an approximately flat side for the bottle to rest upon and thereby hold the side provided with the vent opening l upward to prevent any possible waste of the food through the vent.
When the bottle is not in actual service. the vent opening is closed by means of the cap 6, but when in action for feeding the infant, the closing cap 6 is replaced by the vent cap 7. As the contents are drawn fronig the bottle. air enters through the vent there by preventing collapse of the nipple and insuring a positive supply of food to the infant, thereby obviating disorders resulting from a. collapsed and dry nipple.
lVhat is claimed is:
A nursing bottle in addition to its usual flexible nipple engaging outlethaving a collar relatively close to its closed end and providcd with a vent opening theretln'ough. said collar projecting exterior-1y of. the bottie, and a vent cap in the form of a flexible nipple applicable to said collar. either of said nipples being adapted to be used as an outlet and the: other nipple as a vent.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VENIE A. ISAAC.
