f Application led ctober 13, 1924. Serial' N0. 743,223.
To all wlw/m. t may concern.
Be it known that l, FmLDEN B. AsrmN- FELTER, a citizen of the United States,- and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Lock Means, which invention is fully describedin the following specification.
This invention relates to a lock, particularly intended for use in connection with the control or regulating means for windows A of the character used in closed vehicles; and
. rivets 4. j 5c has for its object the provision of a simple and ecient lock of this character which will be automatically released and permit a free raising or lowering of the associated window member when power for such purpose is applied to the operating crank of the. window regulating means, and is adapted to automatically lock and prevent movementl of the regulating means when power is applied to the window `member or the window member coacting side of the lregulating means. i
, VThe invention is fully/ described in the following specification and, while its broader aspects, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the. accompanying drawings, in whichj Figure 1 is a side elevation of the regulating means disposed adjacent to the member to be operated thereby, with lparts broken away. Fig. 2 is a section on rthe line 2-2 in Fig.V 1, with a part in. full. Fig. 3 iisv a section on the line 3--3 in Fig. 2, with a part in full, and Figs. 4, 5 and 6' are sections on the lines .l1-4, 55 and 6 6, reyspectively, in Fig. 2.
' Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the bracketV or carrying plate for the Window member regulating means, such plate having a portion inturned to form a broadened bearing 2. A cylindrical shell 3 of greater diameter than the bearing 2 has Aits inner end in the present instance outwardly anged and seating against the plate 1 in' concentric outwardly spaced relation to ythe 'bearin 2 and' secured to the plate' by l v he opposite end of the shell 3 is iinturned and formed in coaxial relation to the bearing 2' with a bearing, which is preferably broadened by an outward turning of the edge portion of the shell which forms such bearing. This bearing is ref erably of smaller diameter than the aringe.
\ The clutch A. shaft section 6, which may be termed' the hand-control section, is journaled in the bearing 5, being projected at one end withont said bearing to adapt it to receive an operating member, such for instance as a crank (not shown), and its inner end terminates within the -shell and is preferably slightly enlarged to prevent its outward withdrawal through the bearing 5. This shaft is introduced through the bearing 2 in placing it in its bearing. The inner end of the shaft 6 is provided with an axial bore or socket 7 and the outer end of such socket opens into a cross recess 8 provided in the shaft end.
A shaft section 9, which may be termed the window-control ""section, is projected through the bearing 2 and journaled at its inner end in the socket 7 of the shaft section, while its outer end portion is provided With an enlarged journal portion 10 fitting in the bearing 2 for free turning movements therein. The portion 11 ywithout the journal 10 of this shaft section is adapted to carr shown) which 1s customarily employed to impart raising and lowering movements to the associated window member when the shaft is turned. The locking means employed in connection with the 'regulating mechanism is of the expanding clutch type and employs the shell 3 as the stationary lmember, while the movable expanding member thereof is disposed Within the shell in the armor member (not sides of the shaft and eachpreferably comprising two pieces 12 and'13, secured together, by a rivet 14 in a manner to permit relative rocking movements of the pieces. ieces 12 are of segmental form adapted to fit the shell 3 to have peripheral clutch engagement with the inner peripheral wall thereof, and these pieces are yieldingly separated by coiled. expansion springs 15 mounted in registering sockets provided in the inner adjacent edges of the pieces, two
springs being provided, one at each of opposlte sides of the shaft 9. The clutchv pieces 13 at their inner. .or adjacent edges straddle a flattened or cam portion 16 of the shaft section 9 and coact therewith in such manner that a turning of the shaft 9 and its cam portion 16 in either direction will exert an outward expanding pressure against the pieces 13and communicate eX- panding or clutch engaging movement through them to the clutch pieces 12 by which they are carried.
Lugs 17 project laterally from the inner edge of each clutchJ piece 13 at opposite sides of the cam 16 and enter the end-recess 8 of the shaft section G. These lugs are intended to coact with the walls of said recess in such manner that a turning of the shaft section 6 in either direction will communicate a corresponding turning movement tothe clutch pieces and through them to the shaft section 9, and at the same time will tend to retract the clutch pieces 12 from" clutch engagement with the shell 3. The purpose of making the elements of the movable clutch member in the two pieces, 12 and 13, instead of one, is to facilitate manufacture and to enable the pieces 13 to have a slight pivotal movement relative to the pieces 12 when power is applied through the shaft section 6, as this pivotal action is in some respects advantageous to the operation' of the device, although not essential. A ller-piece Vor washer member 18 is disposed between the members 12 and plate 1, intermediate the'shell 3 and inturned shaft bearing portion of said plate.
From the above description it is apparent that if power is applied initially through the shaft section 6 to operate the control means to effect a raising or lowering of the associated window, such shaft section will act on the lugs 17 to effect a withdrawal of the clutch members l2 from frictional locking engagement with the shell 3 and will act through the pieces or portions 13 of such clutch members to impart rotation to the shaft section 9; On the other hand, if power is applied initially through the shaft section 9, as by an attempt to lower the associated window by application ofpressure thereon, the turning action im-v parted to the shaft section 9 will cause its cam 16 to act on the clutchmembers to effeet an expansion thereoffto have locking or binding coaction with the shell 3.
It is evident that while Lhave particularl referred to the control means as being use f in connection with a window member toefect a raisin or lowering thereof, it may be used in ot er connections for which it may be adapted. f
I wish it understood that my invention isnot limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and ,desire to secureby Letters Patent, is:

In a mechanism of the clam described, stationary means forming a cylindrical clutch shell and axially aligned bearings at vopposite end portions yof the shell, segmental clutch members mounted in op osed relation jecting lugs, two Arelatively rotatable s aft sections journaled in' said bearings, one shaft section projecting between the clutch members and having a cam portion coactin said members to effect an expansion thereof when power is applied initially through such shaft section, and the other shaft Section having` a recessed portion receivin the lugs of the clutch members and operab e to act on the lugs to effect a contraction of the clutch members anda turning of the shaft with section having the cam portion when power is initially applied through the other shaft section.
5. In a mechanism of the class described, stationary means .v forming a cylindrical clutch shell and bearings at opposite ends of the shell, two axially aligned relatively ro? tatahle shaft sections journaled in said bearings, one shaft section having a cam porf tion within the shell and the othershaft section having an end portion terminating within the shell, opposed expanding clutch ymembers mounted Within the shell and each including a pivoted piece which coacts with the cam portion of one shaft section' and has laterally projecting lugs interengaging with the adjacent end of the other shaft section,
