WIND-SHIELD JOINT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON STURDEVANT,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Detroit, in the county of VV-ayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wind- Shield Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had thereinto the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a hinge or pivot joint and to an arrangement thereof that adapts it particularly for use in wind shields and like places where it. is desired to hold a sash member or the like in adjusted angular relation to another member by means which are easily operable and which are so disposed as not to obstruct the vision. i
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings,,Figure 1 is a view of an assembled joint, partially broken away and partially in section, that embodies features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view, partially in longitudinal section and partially in side elevation, of thejoint with the parts free for adjustment; Fig. 3 is a View, partially in section and partially in elevation, taken at right angles to Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view in detail showingthe position of the parts when locked; and Fig. 5 is aview in detail of a keeper; Fig. 6 is a view in detail showing a modification of the invention; Figs. 7 and 8 are views in detail of an operating lever in a modification; andFig. 9 is a view in detail of another form of the operating lever.
As herein shown in preferred form asash member 1 has acircular bearing plate 2 that isformed integral Onor secured to the end portion of the latter as a bearing member.
A flanged or other rabbeted margin indicated at 3 corresponds to the flange and rabbeted margin 4 of a circular cap 5 that is secured, as by a tongue 6 and screws 7 in spaced and non-rotatable engagement with the plate. The sash member 8 has a bearing hub 9 formed or secured on the end thereof toswing on the rabbetedmargins of the cap and plate. The interior periphery of the hub has a plurality of flutes 10 or recesses. As a matter of good construction these may lee formed in a bushing 11 of hardened metal that is inset in the hub and non-rotatably secured thereto as by pins 12 or other suitable means.

or blocks have sliding engagement in a transverse slot or guide-way in the tongue 6 of the cap, being yieldingly separated or projected by a suitably disposed spring 14: or the like so that they bear against the fluted or recessed "face of the hub or bushing. Preferably the flutes 10 are semi-cylindrical depressions to conform to a roll 15 that is inset in a suitable guide socket 16 of each keeper so as to turn freely and eliminate rubbing contact with the hub.
A locking stud 17 is in screwthreadcd engagement with an opening through the cap transverse to the slot in which the keepers play, preferably at the axial center of the cap and hub. Acircular head 18 on the inner end of the stud, is proportioned to enter between the keepers 13 when the latter are fully projected with the rolls in engagement with oppositerecesses of the hub and there by lock them in such position. The outer head 20 of the stud is arranged for convenient manipulation and is so disposed that i when seated against the cap 5, the inner head is inlocking position while a partial turn of the stud in reverse withdraws the inner head into a recess or counterbore of the cap, as indicated in Fig. 2, to clear the keepers.

has a cam plate 26 that is adapted to force the stems 23 apart and thereby push the members21 between the blocks 13 when the latter are separated by theaction ofthe spring 14., thus maintaining the hinges in locked relation. In this construction suit ably disposed springs 27. wvithdraw the members 21 whenthe latch 24 is in initial position. Or, as indicated in Fig. ,9, the. inner end portions 28 of the stems 23 may have pins 29 engaging eccentric slots 30 of be swung on the other members into the angle desired and the parts may then be locked in position either by turning one or both ofthe studs inwardly to seat, or in the modified form by forcing the other locking members between the keepers by use of the latch.
The modification allows the user to operate a wind shield, for example, from either side of a car or from the drivers seat as preferred. 7 I
Thejoint is positivein operation, is simple in construction and presents an exterior that does not obstruct the vision" when used in combination with an automobile wind shield or the like. As the bearing face of the hub and the friction rolls of the keepers may be made of hardened material the parts do not wear appreciably under long and severe usage.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim is z- 1. A pivot joint comprising a member having a hub with recesses in the inner periphery thereof, a member having a bearing plate on which the hub is journaled, a cap secured to the plate and adapted to hold the hub. thereon, a pair of oppositely disposed yieldingly projected keepers movable in the cap in the plane of rotation of the hub adapted to engage the hub recesses, and a locking member in the cap movable transversely of the keepers and having a rotatable head for holding them separated and interlocked positively with the hub, the head of said member receding into said cap to provide clearance for said keepers.
2. A pivot joint comprising a. member having a hub with a series of recesses in the inner periphery thereof, a member having a bearing plate, a cap non-rotatably'secured to the plate, the hub being journaled on the cap and plate, a pair of oppositely disposed keepers movable in a transverse guideway in the cap adapted to enter the recesses in the hub, a springbetween said keepers and a locking member in the cap adapted to be forced between the proximate ends of the keepers in proximity to said spring when the latter have entered recesses in the hub and to hold them in such position.
3. A pivot oint -comprising a member having a hub, a bushing secured in the hub with recesses in the inner periphery thereof,
a member having a bearingplate'on which the hub is rotatable, a cap non-rotatably secured to the plate and adapted to co-act with the latter. as a bearing for the hub, oppositely disposed keepers in sliding engagement with the cap adapted to enter the bushing recesses, a compression spring arranged between'said keepers and having end convolutions engaging said keepers, and a locking member in the cap adapted to be forced between the proximate ends of the keepers at one side of said spring when the-latter have entered opposite recesses for securing them therein.
4. A pivot joint comprising a member having a hub with longitudinally fluted inner periphery, a bearing plate having a rabbeted margin on which the hub is rotatable, a cap nonrotatably secured'to the plate and having a rabbeted margin and adapted to hold the hub thereon, a pair of oppositely. disposed keepers movable in a transverse guideway in the cap, a friction roll journaled in the end of each keeper and adapted to enter the flutes of the hub, a spring arranged between said keepers and a locking member in the cap adapted to be forced between the proximate ends of the keepers at one side of said spring when the rolls have entered opposite recesses in the hub and to lock the keepers in suchposition. v
5. A pivot joint comprising a member having a hub, a member having a plate on which the hub is journal-ed, a cap non-rotatably secured on the plate for retaining the hub thereon provided with a transverse guideway, a bushing non-rotatablysecured to the hub between the plate and cap and provided with a fluted interior periphery, a pair, of keepers sliding in the guideway, a spring member yieldingly projecting the keepers, a friction roll journaled in the outer end of each keeper and adapted to enter the flutes of the bushing, and a stud in screw-threaded engagement with the cap having an inner head adapted to lie be tween the keepers at one side of said spring when the rolls of the latter are in opposite recesses and the stud is screwed home in the cap. a r
