WASTE REMOVER FOR CUTTING MACHINES.

Be it known that I, LAv1NoUs LA oNn, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Worcester, in the county of VVorce'ster and Commonwealth ofMassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a WasteRemover for Cutting Machines, of
which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My inventionrelates to machines for outt1ng,-s11tt1ng or scorlng asheet of material and at the-same ti'me trimming the longitudinal edges thereof, aspthe materlal is effectually preventing any accumulation of waste material which might interfere with the operation of the machine.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the machine generally comprises a frame 1,upon which is rotatably mounted a cylinder 2, adapted to be rotatably driven from asuitable source of power, not shown. The frame 1 supports a table 3, with the top surface of which the periphery of the cylinder 2 is substantially flush. A cutter bar 4 extends across the machine above the cylinder 2 and a cutting disk 5 is arranged on the bar 4, so as to coact with the cylinder 2 and trim the edge of a sheet of material passing between the disk 5 and the cylinder 2. Qther cutting or scoring devices 6 are carried on the bar 4:, the exact form and arrangement of the devices 6 forming no part of the present invention.
A waste remover 7 is mounted on a por tion of the frame 1 beyond the end of the cylinder 2, and as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, comprises a bracket 8 provided with an upwardly curved flange. 9 having a slightly greater radius of curvature than thecylinder 2. The flange 9 terminates in a straight portion 10 which extends upwardly in the direction of the table 3 and is tangent to the surface of the cylinder 2: An arm 11 is pivotally supported on the bracket 8 by a stud 12, and carries at its end a roll 13- rotatably mounted on a pin 14. Theroll 13 is maintained in the direction of the cylinder 2 by means of a spring 15 connected at its ends to the arm 11 and tothe bracket 8.
An adjusting screw 16 passes through the arm 11 with its projecting end abutting a lug 17 provided on the bracket 8. The spring 15ftends to hold the end of the screw 16 in engagement with the lug 17 and a lock nut 18 coacts with the screw 16 to lock the screw in position so as to maintain the periphery of the roll 13 away from the cylinder 2-, .adistance substantially equal to the thickness of the material to be passed through the machine.
When the machine described above is in i operation, a sheet of material, which it is desired to trim, is passed between the cylinder 2 and the cutter 5, which removes a strip of waste material from the edge of the the cylinder 2, the sheet is also operated upon by the scoring or cutting devices 6, if desired. As the trimmed sheet emerges .Sheet. In passing between the cutter 5 and 11 from between the cutter 5 and the cylinder 2, it passes on to the table 3 which supports it horizontally, but the strip of waste material being unsupported, falls to one side of the table 3. In order to further direct the waste strip to the waste remover 7, a deflector 19 is provided which turns the waste strip downwardly into engagement with the straight portion 10 of the flange 9, which deflects the strip downwardly between the curved portion 9 and the cylinder 2. The waste strip is thus directed between the roll 13 and the cylinder 2, from between which the strip emerges in a direc tion opposite to thatof the trimmed sheet on the table 8. In this way the waste ma terial resultingefrom the trimming of a sheet in the machine, is positively removed from the machine and deposited on the floor from which it may be readily gathered up and carried away.
' It is apparent that my improved waste removingdevice is extremely effective in operation, for the reason that the upwardly extending portion 10 of the flange 9 intercepts the waste strips just asthey are severed by the cutter 5, thereby substantially eliminating all possibility of the waste material piling up on the table 3, from where it would be extremely difficult to remove, and where a continued accumulation of: waste material would ultimately interefere with pro-per operation of the machine. My device is capable of ready adjustment to handle waste material of difierent thicknesses, for the roll 13 may be closely adj usted by means of the set screw 16 to always bring sufficient pressure to bear on the waste material to cause it to be discharged from the machine without jammin \Vhile I have shown my invention as applied to a particular arrangement of parts of a cutting or trimming machine, it is not so limited, but is susceptible of application to other similar machines without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. I desire, therefore, that only such limitation be imposed thereon as may come within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim,
1. in a machine of the class described, the combination with a rotating cylinder for moving a sheet of material and a cutting device adapted to trim one edge of said sheet, of a waste remover comprising a deficctor and a roll in frictional engagement with said cylinder.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a rotating cylinder for moving a sheet of material and a cutting device adapted to trim one edge of said sheet, of a waste remover comprising a member adapted to deflect the waste strip from the sheet and a roll in frictional engagement with said cylinder for discharging the waste strip from the machine.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a rotating cylinder for moving a sheet of material and a device adapted to trim one edge of said sheet, of a waste remover comprising a member curved around said cylinder, and an auxiliary roll to engage the waste in conjunction with said cylinder.
4. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a rotating cylinder for moving a sheet of material and a device adapted to trim one edge of said sheet, of a waste remover comprising a member curved around said cylinder, and a deflecting member to direct the waste downward.
5. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a rotating cylinder for moving a sheet of material and a device adapted to trim one edge of said sheet, of a waste remover comprising a member curved around said cylinder, a deflecting member to direct the waste downward, and an auxiliary roll to engage the waste in conjunction with said cylinder.
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a rotating cylinder for moving a sheet of material and a device adapted to trim one edge of said sheet, of a waste remover comprising a deflecting member, a curved trough member, a roll to engage the waste in conjunction with said cylinder, and spring means connecting said roll to the curved trough member.
7. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a rotating cylinder for moving a sheet of material and a device adapted to trim one edge of said sheet, of a waste remover comprising a downward deflecting member, a trough member, a roll to engage the waste in conjunction with said cylinder, and adjusting means to adjust the pressure of said roll against said cylinder.
