GAUGE FOR SHEET-CUTTING MACHINES.

The invention relates to sheet cutting 1na chines and has particular reference to the back gauge of such machines against which the sheets are positioned preliminary to being fed between the cutters- In some forms of these cutting or shearing machines the gauge, in the form of a metal bar, is secured to the wooden bed of the machine by fastening screws engaging directly in the bed. In the use of the machine the operators bring the sheets against this gauge bar with some considerable force in positioning the same, particularly in those cases where the sheets are handled in bunches and itbecomes necessary to strike them against the gauge bar with some force in order to bring the edges of the respective sheets of the bunch into registry with each other and in contact with the gauge. Such continuous striking of the sheets against the gauge has a tendency to loosen its holding screws in the wooden bed of the machine and this results in throwing the gauge out of adjustment and the consequent irregular or improper cutting of the sheets.
The continuous loosening ofthe screws in this way soon enlarges their openings in the wooden bed to such an extent that effective retightening of the same is prevented, whereupon it becomes necessary to either change the position of the gauge on the bed, which is undersirable, or else provide the gauge with new screw openings to permit of the fastening screws being entered into the bed at new points without change in 0. tion of the gauge, and this operation iorming new screw-openings is objectionable both on account of expense and also in that it dis} figures the gauge.
Having the foregoing 1n mind, it has been the object of my present invention to provide an improved construction of gauge by means of which the objectionable-features referred to may be avoided and accurate adjustment of the gauge be maintained. This object is efi'ected by means of the novel features of construction hereinafter described and claimed and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawmgs, in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of so much of a cutting or shearing machine as is necessary for the proper illustration of my invention.

This adjustable member 4 is held in ad than the base member, and means for securing said sheet engaging member in adjusted position on the base member and with the lower edge of its Vertical flange pressed against the sheet supporting bed.

In a sheet cutting machine,rthe combination with the sheet supporting bed and the cutting device, of a sheet gauge comprising a base member mounted on the bed, a right angled member adjustably mounted on said base member with one flange thereof resting upon the upper surface of the base member and with the other or vertical flange overlying the base member at the gauge side TY thereof, and means for securing said adjustable gauge member in adjusted position on the base member including set screws threaded into the base member with their inner ends bearing against the inner side of the said vertical flange of the adjustable gauge member.
4.7 In a sheet cutting machine, the combi nation with the sheet supporting bed and the cutting device, of a sheet gauge mounted on the bed in a position at right angles to the cutting device and comprising a fixed base member, a sheet engaging member adjustably mounted on said base member for movement in a direction toward and from the cutter and being provided with scale markings thereon, an adjusting screw connecting the sheet engaging member with the base member for adjusting the same on said base member relatively to the cutter and means for securing said sheet engaging member in adjusted position on the base member.
