UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER SMITH, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
- IMPROVEMENT IN LlNlNG-MACHINES FOR WALLS AND CEILINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,195, dated August 18, 1874 application filed June 23,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WALTER SMITH, of Paterson, in the State of New Jersey, have invent-ed a new and Improved Lining-Machine for Walls and Ceilings, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a serrated band passing over suitable rollers attached to a movable frame placed into a vessel containing the color, whereby the color is carried up and can be applied to the wall or ceiling; or a serrated roller may be arranged at the upper end in contact with a smooth band, which latter will carry up the color and communicate the same .to the serrated roller.
, Figure I represents a longitudinal section of a lining-machine embodying my invention. Fig. II is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. III and IV are front and side views of a modified construction, with the color vessel or reservoir in section.
A represents a vessel or reservoir to contain the color. Into this vessel a frame, B, is fitted, provided with a suitable flange,'n, which fits upon the top of the vessel'A, and is kept in place by the cap 0, which latter acts, at the same time, for the purpose of collecting any of the surplus color and bringing the same back into the vessel A. The frame B is provided at the upper and lower ends with rollers D D, over which a serrated band, E, is stretched. The band E, passing through the color contained in the vessel A, will carry up the same, which is then applied at its upper surface to the wall or ceiling, producing perfectly-straight lines of a width corresponding with the width of the band E.
In Figs. III and IV a serrated roller, D, is
arranged in contact with a smooth band, F, passing over rollers D D. This band F is moved around its rollers through its friction with the surface of the roller D, and, passing through the color, will carry the same upward and deliver the same to the surface of the serrated roller D, from which it is applied to the wall or ceiling. By this arrangement only the serrated roller D has to be changed for the purpose of producing wider or narrower lines, while in the former case, where a serrated band E is used, this band E has to be changed for the same purpose.
The motion of the band E or of the hand F through the color will keep the same at all times well mixed.
Upon the serrated band E, or upon the surface of the serrated rollers D, any desired de sign orfigures may be out, when the corresponding figures or design will be produced upon the wall or ceiling.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a vessel, A, for containing color, a frame, B, provided with a serrated band, E, passing over suitable rollers D D, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with a color-containing vessel, a frame, B, having a serrated roller, D, at its upper end, in contact with a band, F, passing over suitable rollers D D, constructed and arranged as described, and for the purpose set forth.
WALTER SMITH.
