UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM R. WITHERS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN D. FAITOUTE, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,794, dated August 4, 1874 application filed November 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. WITHERS, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a Mystic-Ball Toy, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in inclosing one or more balls in another, so that in the hand but one appears, but when it is thrown the inside ball or balls burst out and two or more are seen.
The mode of construction is as follows: First, I make a shell-ball, A, of wood or other material, in two sections or more, if desired. These sections are hinged on one side at C, and are provided with a rubber cord, D, stretched across from one to the other, for the purpose of drawing them together. In one side, near the hinge, is secured a spiral or other spring, E.
In use the sections are spread apart, and the ball fis placed on the top of the spiral spring, which is pressed down so that this ball will be inclosed inside of the ball A, which is held closed in the hand of the operator; but on throwing it up, the spiral spring being stronger than the rubber, the ball f presses against the edge of the sections until they open and it is thrust out; but as soon as it is out the rubber spring closes the sections into a ball, and the skill of the operator may be seen in being able to catch both balls-one in each hand.
The balls A and f may be used in play without either the rubber or spiral spring, or any others in place. A string, H, may be attached to one of the sections, with a loop on the opposite end to slip on the finger, to prevent the ball A, if not caught in the hand, from falling on the licor and being broken. Various other objects may be thrown out of the shell instead of a ball, as figures', images, Snc.
I claim- 1. The improved toy, consisting of the hollow ball A, `formed in sections and hinged, substantially as and for thepurposes specified.
2. The hollow ball A, formed in sections hinged, and the springs D and E, combined and arranged to operate substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
WILLIAM R. WITHERS.
