Be it known that I, CHARLEs VVINKEL- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Bergen, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folders for Circular lVork, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to folders for sewing machines and its principal object is to provide means for folding under the edge of a comparatively small circular piece of cloth and feeding it to the stitching mechanism of a sewing machine so that it is folded and stitched with precision entirely around the circle. It is especially adapted for sewing under the edges. of the circular insignia patches used on the sleeves of the uniforms of soldiers, sailors and members of other organizations.

It comprises in its preferred embodiment a supporting or anchoring plate adapted to be adjustably secured onthe bed-plate of a sewing machine in operative relation to the stitch-forming mechanism and provided at one end with a scroll section substantially U-shaped in cross section to form a work turning channel open laterally and with a tongue in the shape of a plate with a curved edge extending into this open side but spaced from all sides of the scroll section. On the under side of the tongue-plate but spaced a suitable distance from the curved edge thereof is a finger forming a guide for the free edge of the folded under margin of the material. The tongue-plate is adjustable relative to the scroll section to allow for different thicknesses of material.

Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention. Fig. 1' is aplan viewshowing a portion of the bed-plate of the sewing machine and presser-foot with the folder in operative relation thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the folder in operative position as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same. Formed on the end of the plate-7 is .a scroll section 10 which is substantially U.shaped in cross section forming a channel and is placed with the legs extending substantially horizontally with the open side tothe left as viewed in Fig. 1. A sewing machine having stitching mechanism including a needle, and a hemming device comprising a flat plate having an outwardly arched, circular edge, on which plate fabric is adapted to rest and to be turned with the edge of the fabric extending over said curved edge, and a folder arranged to guide the edge of the fabric around said curved edge whereby the fabric may be turned around on said plate while the edge thereof is folded around the curved edge of said plate said needle being disposed approximately in the line of said circular edge.

7. A sewing machine having stitching mechanism including a needle, and a heinining device comprising a flat plate having an outwardly arched, circular edge terminating adjacent the sewing needle, on which plate fabric is adapted to rest and to be turned with the edge of the fabric extending over said curved edge, and a folder arranged to guide the edge of the fabric around said curved edge whereby the fabric may be turned around on said plate while the edge thereof isfolded around the curved edge of said plate.

8. A sewing machine having stitching mechanism including a needle, and a heinming device comprising a flat plate having an outwardly arched, circular edge terminat ing adjacent the sewing needle, on which plate fabric is adapted to rest and to be turned with the edge of the fabric extending over said curved edge, and a folder ar ranged to guide the edge of the fabric around said curved edge whereby the fabric may be turned around on said plate while the edge thereof is folded around the curved edge of said plate, said'folder having a wall opposed to said curved edge and extending tangentially relatively to said curved edge.

9. A sewing machine having stitching mechanism including a needle, and a hemming device comprising a flat platehaving an outwardly arched, circular edge terminating adjacent the sewing needle, on which plate fabric is adapted to rest and to be turned with the edge of thefabric extending over said curved edge, and a' folder ar ranged to guidethe edge of the fabric around and under said curved edge whereby the fabric may be turned around on said plate while the edge thereof is folded around said curved edge, and a gauge under said plate against which the turned edge of the fabric is adapted to; engage.

10. A sewing machine comprising sewing means and a hemining device, including a fabric plate having a curved edge leading toward the sewing means, a folder adapted to guide the edge of the fabric around and under said curved edge, and a gauge or stop under said plate having an abutting surface crossing the arc of said curved edge.

11. A sewing machine comprising sewing meansincluding a needle and a needle plate having a needle aperture, and a groove in ad Vance of the needle aperture, a plate having a curved edge leading toward said needle aperture, a folder adapted to guide the edge of the fabric around and under said curved edge, said folder extending into the groove in the needle plate, and" a gauge or stop for the edge of the-fabric arranged below said curved edge and extending into said groove in the needle plate.

12. A sewing machine comprising stitohing means including an apertured needlev plate, a sewing needle operating in said aperture, said needle plate having an aperture for the feed dog arranged near the needle aperture, a'feed dog movable therein,

a fabric plate having an outwardly arched curved edge leading toward and terminating ust in advance of the needle aperture of the needle plate, on which fabric plate fabric is adapted to rest and to be turned with the edge of the fabric extending over said curved edge, a folder arranged to guide the edge of the fabric around said curved edge,

and a presser foot near said needle, having a claw extending inside'the are of the curved edge of said fabric plate.
