KJHICAGG, ILLINOIS, ASSIGITOR- TC UNIGN SPECIAL MACHINE COIvZPANY, 0i OHIGAG'Q, ILLZNQES, A CORPORATION OF ILLINDIS.
FOLDING AND GUIDING ATTACHMENT FOR- SEVJING-MACHINES.
Application filed February 9, 28123.
To cZZ whom it may concern? Be it known that 1, JOHN i. L'LAL'BEAN? citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, Illinois, have invented new and useful improvements in Folding and. G1 Attachments for Sewing-Machines, o; the following is a description, reference being had to the accompany ng drawing to the figures of reference thereon.
My invention relates to folding guides for attachment to sewing machines, the ob ject being to provide such an attachment to guide and turn a hem on a piece of fabric, and at the same time fold around the edge of the hem fold a binding strip, to deliver the same to the stitch-forming mec anism of a sewing machine, v-vheroby the fabric, the turned-in portion thereof and the binding strip hen). folds are secured together by line of stitchine".
The invention is illustrated accom panying drawings, which,-
Figure 1 is a front view in perspective of a folder constructed in accordance with my invention, the prcsser foot and a portion connection with stitclsformmg mechanism.
In these drawings, 1 represents a base piece adapted to he adjustabl attached to the bed plate of a sewing machine, The sewing machine herein shown, or so much as is necessary to a complete understanding of my invention, is of the well known Union Special type of two line machine. Extending from the base piece is a vertical wall 2 having a substantially horizontally extending-lip 8, which overhangs a portion of the plane surface i upon which the main fabric rests. Beneath the inner edge of the surface 4 is a recess 5, which forms with the vertical wall 2 a folding and. guiding recess to form a hem fold on the main piece of fabric. Attached to or formed with the body part of the folder is the vertically cu ed and tapering guide for the binding Strip, the imicr concave wall of which its forward end is cut away as at 8, so the row edgeof the hem fold may he is contact with Specification of Letters Patent. l' 'gg gqgn 'gefl Jam, 3Q i917,

the )in.di:u,s strip. The binding strip guide is tapered and curved so as to embrace the raw edge of the hem fold, and the walls are turned in, so as to form hem folds 0n the upper and lower faces of the binding strip.
Attached to the under side of the surface 4 is the wire 9, forming a loop 10't0 guide the binding strip to the opening of the binding guide 7.
wai 2 and Wall of the binding guide, are vertical walls 15, chamfcred ed to come undcr the toe of the presser foot, and by these walls the edge of the fabric and the bound edge of the hem fold are kept in proper relation guided to the stitch forming mechanism in operation, the fabric is inserted in the folder from the left on top of the plane surface, and forms the hem fold 12, as shown in 3. file binding strip is guided through the loop 10 into the binding guide 9'. As are fed to the stitch-form- 1, a line of stitching 18 passes the fabric, the upper fold of the strip, the hem fold of thefabric and the lower fold of the binding strip, and if to increase the ornamental uppearunce of the fabric, a line of stitching l-l through the edge of the fabric and the hem fold.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A folding guide for sewing machines comprising a supporting base, a fabric support projecting laterally from said base and terminating in a guiding recess, whereby of the fabric is folded back upon itself, said folding guide having a recess extending above and below the end of said {first named recess for guiding a tape, said recesses merging into each other at the delivery end of the folder, whereby the tape is folded around the edge of the folded buc k fabric,
2. folding guide for sewing machines comprising a supporting base, a fabric support projecting laterally from said base, and terminating in a guiding recess, whereby he ed e of the fabric is folded back 11 )on 41 l itself, said folding guide having a recess extei'uling above and below the end of said first named recess for guiding a tape, said recesses merging into each other at the derojecting rearwardly from the vertical livery end of the folder, hereby the tape is folded around the edge of the folded back fabric, said recess for the tape having means for folding the edges of the tape as it passes through the. folder.
3. A folding guide for sewing machines comprising a supporting base, a vertical Wall rising therefrom and having a laterally projecting lip, a fabric support carried by said base and extending laterally therefrom and beneath said lip, said fabric support being spaced from'said lip and vertical wall, and from said supporting base at its inner side, whereby a fabric resting on said sup port may be folded back underneath itself,
and fabric support having a guiding recess formed therethrough extending above and below the edge of the folded fabric, whereby a tape may be folded around the edge of the fabric.
4. The combination of a sewing machine having spaced needles of a folding guide said supporting base comprising a supporting base, a fabric support projecting laterally from said base-and terminating in a guiding recess whereby the edge of the fabric is folded back upon itself, said folding guide having a recess extending above and below the end of said first named recess for guiding a tape, said recesses merging into each other at the delivery end of the folding guide whereby the tape is folded around the edge of the folded back fabric, said folding guide being so disposed relative to said spaced needles that one of said needles passes through the folded fabric adjacent the fold therein while the other needle passes through the fabric adjacent the free edge of the fold and through the edges of said tape.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
