Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Gomi- LnY, citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Morris, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide an automatic selfcleaning cuspidor adapted for use in automobiles especially the closed models, as well as street cars, railroad cars, etc. n f

This and other objects of this invention will be fully illustrated in the drawing, described in the specification and pointed out in the claims at` the end thereof.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cuspidor as it appears when mounted in the floor of a car.

Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the cuspidor.

In the figures of the drawing like reference numerals indicate like parts.

The cuspidor forming the subject matter of my present invention is constructed in a manner that will permit a ready mounting of the same in the Hoor or other convenient point o f the car. It is further constructed in a. manner that makes it possible to keep the cuspidor clean and sanitary at all times.

As illustrated in the drawing the cuspidor comprises a cylindrical metal casing 1 having an outwardly flaring, funnel shaped top 2 provided there-on. A horizontal liange 3 encircles the funnel shaped top and has provided therein suitable holes 4t and 5 through which pass they screws for fastening the cuspidor to the floor board 6 of the car to firmly anchor it in place therein.

The cuspidor is provided with a swinging cover 7 and a swinging bottom 8. Both the cover and bottom are mounted on the pivot pin 9 one at the upper end and the 1924. Serial No. 713,088.

expansion spring 1l carried on the lower end of the pivot pin. This spring forces the short arm 12 provided on the periphery of the bottom 8 upwardly so as to firmly hold the bottom 8 against the opening in the bottom of the casing of the cuspidor. For this reason the lower end of the pivot pin is made rectangular in cross section and the opening in 'the short arm 12 of the bottom thru which the lower end of the pivot pin passes has a corresponding rectangular outline. The arm 12 is thus splined to the pin and permits a sliding engagement of t-he bottom 8 on the pivot pin so that the spring 1l can force the bottom against the opening in the bottom of the cuspidor. The spring 11 also pulls the cover 7 down onto the top of the cuspidor keeping the cover always tight thereon.

The cover 7 and bottom 8 are held on -the pivot pin 9 in the same relative position 'to each other so that when the one is opened the other is closed and vice versa. The cover 7 is provided with a. small lug 13 at the top thereof forming a handle for the cover by means of which it may be swung to one side to open and close the. cuspidor. On the under side of the cover is provided a small projection 14 that isadapted to engage into the groove l5 yprovided in the flange 3 to firmly hold the cover in place on the cuspidor and prevent its swinging open when the. car vibrates or is jolted when going over a rough road. The lug 10 is provided with a small projection 16 that extends downwardly on one side thereof. This projection serves as a stop for the short arm 12 of the bottom 8 of the cuspidor so that it can swing in but one direction to open the bottom of the cuspidor.

I claim:

l. In a cuspidor, the combination of a cylindrical casing having an outwardly flaring funnel shaped top, pivot pin mounted t-o oscillate on one side of said casing, al cover carried at the upper end of said pivot pin and a bottom splined to 'the lower end of said pivot pin, means for yieldingly holding said cover and said bottom against the bottom and top of said cylindrical casing.

2. In a cuspidor, the combination of a cylindrical casing having an outwardly fiaring funnel shaped top, pivot pin mounted to osoiliate on one side of said casing, a, cover carried at the upper end of said pivot pin and a bottom splined to the lower end of said pivot pin, means for yieidingly holding' said cover and said bottom against the bottom und top of Said cylindrical casing, said cover and said bottom being positioned to radially project from said pivot pin :it an 10 angle to each other.
