ST TES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT 0. RUSSELL, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, AND CHARLES LEIGH PAULUS, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
ELECTRIC BOMB-RACK SAFETY LOCK.
Application filed April 18, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, HERBERT O. Rossnm. and CHARLES LEIGH PAULUS, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit and Dayton, in the counties of Vayne and Montgomery and States of Michigan and Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Bomb-Rack Safety Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a safety lock applicable to a bomb rack and having provision for locking, clamping or holding, and releasing the safety wires of bombs car ried by the rack.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of the safety lock;
Figure 2 is a diametrical section through the same;
Figure 8 is an end view of the same.
Figure & is a view looking toward the opposite end thereof.
The safety lock, in the illustrated embodiment thereof, consists of a solenoid 1 which operates a core or plunger 2. The member 2 is connected by means of a link 3, to one arm of a cam lever 4. The other arm of the cam lever 4 has a cam face with a depression the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. The arm d operates against the adjacent one of a series of safety wire clamping or holding members 5 shown in the form of balls which are urged in the direction of the cam lever 4: by means of a spring 6.
The device embodies a suitable housing which is formed with a channel or guideway (3 in which the balls 5 are placed. Slots 7 are formed in said housing and intersect the channel or guideway (3. The slots 7 permit the safety wires of the bombs carried by the rack to be inserted so as to Serial No. 555,397.
be held by and between the balls 5. hen the member 2 is in the position shown in Figure 1, the cam surface of the lever 4 forces the balls 5 against a stop 7 compressing the spring 6. Inasmuch as the safety wires of the bombs are inserted through the slots 7 and carried past the balls, below the contact points of the balls when the plunger 2 is in the position shown in Figure 1, the bombs when dropping will leave their safety wires retained in the slots 7. In case the bomb dropper decides to drop the bombs safe or without releasing the safety wires, a button or switch in the bombers compartment energizes the solenoid 1, thus retracting the plunger 2 to allow the low portion 8 of the cam surface of the lever l to come opposite the adjacent ball 5. This clearance surface of the cam permits the balls to move away from the stop 7 and permits the safety wires to be pulled from between the clamping balls without releasing said wires from the firing mechanism of the bombs.
What we claim is 1. In combination with a bomb rack, a safety locking device for holding and re leasing the safety wires of bombs, including a solenoid having a core movable therein, a housing on the solenoid having wire clamping members therein and setting and releasing means for said wire clamping members operable by the movement of said core.
2. In combination with a bomb rack, a safety locking device for holding and releasing the safety wires of bombs, including a solenoid having a core movable therein, a housing on the solenoid, wire clamping members movable in said housing, a pivotally mounted cam for engagement with the wire clamping members and a link connecting said cam with said core to rock said cam upon movement of said core.
In testimony whereof we have aiiixed our signatures.
HERBERT O. RUSSELL. CHARLES LEIGH PAULUS.
