Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROSCOE B. WHEELER, OF NILES, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OE ON E-HALF HIS RIGHT 'IO HENRY LARDNER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BASKET-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,944, dated June 9, 1:574; application filed December 5, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoscoE B. VHEELER, of Niles, Berrien county and State of Michigan, have invented a Basket-Cover, of which the following is a specification:
The nature and object of this invention are to produce a basket-cover that shall be light, durable, and cheap, and suieiently strong to allowseveral baskets to be put 011e 011 top of another without damaging the contents of the baskets, and that may be used either side up.
The accompanying drawing forms a part of this specification, and shows in Figure l a top view of a cover embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a vertical transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a view of the under side of Fig. 1.
I construct this cover of strips of laminated wood, A. These are sufliciently long to reach across the top of the basket to be covered, and are formed by placing them crossing each other radially at the center, a sutlicientnumber being used to till the circle at the circumference of the hoops B B. These hoops are ot' equa-l size, and attached to the opposite sides of the cover by means of nails driven through them and the laminze A. The outer ends of the strips of laminae project through beyond the hoops B B a distance equal to the thickness of the top rim ofthe basket. Nails are also driven through the cover at the center and clinched. The outer corners of the strips of laminae are trimmed oi' for the purpose of reducing the heft and making it more convenient to fasten onto the basket.
This cover will be slightly convex on both sides, and consequently may be used either side up, and is designed to be used principally for shipping and reshipping crackers and fruit and analogous substances.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rIhe reversible basket-cover, consisting of the pieces of laminae A, laid crossing each other at the center radially, and secured near the outer ends between the hoops B B, said outer ends extending beyond the hoops suiiiciently to cover the top rim of the basket, as and for the purposes set forth.
R. B. I/VHEELER. XVitnesses:
I). H. VHEELER, HENRY LARDNEE.
