W. HALL. COVERED BASKET.
No. 441,006. Patented NOV. 18, 1890.
I la/lio n Hall UNITED STATES i ATENT FFICE,
\VALTON HALL, OF LODI, NE\V YORK.
COVERED BASKET.
SPECIFICATION fonning part of Letters Eatent No. 441,006, dated November 18, 1890.
Application filed July 81, 1890- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTON HALL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lodi, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Crate Boxes or Baskets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in baskets or boxes which are adapted to be used with crates in packing fruit for shipment and it consists in an improved packing box or basket the outer shape of which is rectangular, the end pieces being provided at their upper ends with staples or eyes for the reception of the bent ends of abail or handle, which is adapted to retain the cover in place, the ends of the boxes also having attached on their inner sides bent pieces of veneer, which do'away with the interior sharp corners of the box and also form a rest for the cover.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a crate box or basket constructed in accordance with my invention, the cover being removed. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section.
The crate-box is made up of rectangular end pieces A A, of considerable thickness when taken in connection with the other portions of the box. To the side and bottom edges of the end pieces are permanently secured strips or side pieces B, of less thickness than the ends. The bottom of the boxis attachedto the end pieces A A in the usual manner, and to the end pieces and sides are secured Serial No: 360,533. (No model.)
pieces of veneer or thin wood 0 O, which extend across the corners of the box and prevent sharp corners. To the upper edges of the end pieces A A are located staples a, through which pass the bent ends of the bail orhandle E, made up of a single piece of wire, which is adapted to pass through said staples and contact with the ends of the cover D, so as to retain the same in place; This cover D is adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the bent pieces G0, which do not extend to the full height of the end pieces A.
In packing boxes or baskets thus constructed the handle can be turned downwardly to lie upon the top. Said boxes, beingrcctanguvlar in shape, can be readily packed in crates.
Sharp corners being obviated, the fruit can be carried more secure and with less liability of bruising.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a Wooden crate box or basket, consisting of end pieces A A, sidesB B,and a bottom secured to each other to form a rectangular structure with a removable top, of independent curved piecesOOof rigidmaterial secured to the end pieces and sides of the crate or basket so as to lie over the corners of the same, said curved pieces being of the same height as the sides and of less height than the ends, together with a removable top and a pivoted bail with inwardly-projecting ends which engage with said top, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 1
\VALTON HALL.
