P. ROTH METHOD FOR PUMPING HOT LIQUIDS Filed June 17, 1924 Peczro Both Patented Dec. 9, 1924.
PTENT PEDRO ROTH, OF BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA.
METHOD FOR PUMPING HOT LIQUIDS.
Application filed June 17, 1924. Serial No. 720,639.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PEnRo Ro'rI-r, citizen of the Republic of Argentina, residing at de Mayo Street, Buenos Aires, Argentina, have invented certain newand use- 't'ul improvements in Methods for Pumping Hot Liquids, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new method for pumping hot liquids, its object being to provide asimple and economical means by which the drawbacks incident to these operations when. using the known methods are easily eliminated.
The pumping of liquids at high temperatures involves considerable drawbacks and difficulties as heretofore carried out, and the problem, although very well known, has not found a satisfactory and complete solution.
According to my invention, all these drawbacks are easily obviated in such a manner that the pumping of liquids at very high temperatures becomes as easy an operation as in the case of liquids having normal temperatures.
The main feature of my invention consists in omitting the piston of the ordinary pumps and in utilizing, within the body of the pump, a fraction of the potential energy of the liquid at high temperature to vaporize a certain amount of another liquid having a boiling point lower than the temperature at which the liquid to be pumped stands. In this way, the vapors so generated act as a piston to move the liquid mass contained within the body of the pump.
In order that my invention be clearly understood and easily carried into practice, reference will now be made to the appended diagrammatic drawing showing a partsectional front view of one of the possible embodiments of said invention.
in the said drawing, 1 is a pump body having an inlet 2 and an outlet 3 with the corresponding valves 6 and 9. 4 is a pipe with a blow-oft valve 8, and 5 an injector with the corresponding valve 7 The operation of the device is as follows By its own weight or due to the pressure to which it is subjected, the hot liquid to be pumped enters the body of the pump 1 through the check valve 6. During this period of the cycle, the valve-s 9 and 7 are closed and the blow-off pipe 8 is open.
The valve 7 of the injector 5 is then opened and a suitable amount of the liquid to be vaporized is injected therethrough. Said liquid will then absorb heat from the liquid at high temperature within the body of the pump, and on passing into gaseous state will exert thereon a pressure by which the liquid mass will be forced through the valve 9 and the outlet 3. The check valve 6 and the blow-off valve 8 will be closed during this period of the cycle.
After this, the valve 8 is opened, whereby the vapors within the pump body will escape through the pipe 4c- The valves 7 and 9 are then closed. The cycle of operations is thus completed and the pump is ready to receive a new charge of liquid at high temperature.
The synchronism of the valves in their operation and the injection of the liquid to be vaporized may be obtained by any suitable means independently of the inveir tion proper, the scope of which is hereinafter specifically claimed.
Having now fully described and ascertained the nature of my present invention and in what manner the same is to be carried into practice, I declare that what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A method of pumping liquids at high temperatures, which consists in introducing the hot liquid into a closed receptacle having an inlet and an outlet for such liquid; and thereafter injecting into said receptacle a different liquid having a boiling point lower than the prevailing temperature of the first liquid, whereby the second liquid will be vaporized by direct contact with the first liquid, and the vapors so generated will form a gaseous piston which acts directly against said first liquid to expel it through, the outlet.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature,
PEDRO ROTH.
