. UNITED STATES CHARLES A... UFFORD, OF DORCHESTEB', MASSACHUSETTS.
- GARMENT FORM.
Application filed' April 1, 1922. Serial No. 548,720.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. UFFORD, a resident of Dorchester, Sufiolk County, State of Massachusetts, and a citizen of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Forms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dress forms, one of the objects being to provide a dress form arranged for handy and accurate adjustment at the neck, waist, hip and skirt portions. A further object of my invention is to improve the means for eifecting the various adjustments, that is. to
say, to embody the adjusting mechanism in a simple efiicient structure not easily damaged and readilymanipulated. I have found that to provide a skirt portion of a form that will meet the many conditions in cident to garment hanging, it is essential to construct the skirt portion out of a plurality of sections adjustably connected together, each section being independent of its adjacent sections, excepting for the ad justable connections A further object of my invention is to improve the mechanism for adjusting, the several sections making up the adjustable waist portionof the garment form. a
I willnot proceed to describe myinvention in detail, the novel features of which I will finally claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a face view of a portionof a a dress form embodying my improvements;
Fig.2 is a top plan view of the neck portion, with parts broken away;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detail view illustrating the adjusting means for the waist sections; some of the arms being omitted; Y I
Fig. 4 is a sectionon line 4-4 Fig.
Fig. 5 is aifragmentary-detail viewlllustrating the. adjustable connections for the form sections;
Fig. .6 is a detail view, illustratingthe hinge connection between the waist sections and lowermost sections of the form;
Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectional view, illustrating the mounting for the 1nuer end of each arm for adjusting the waist sections;
i I Fig. 8 is a plan view thereof;
Fig. ,9 is a View of the adjustabldskirt portion collapsed;
"Fig. 12 is a view in elevation of the ad justable skirt portion extended.
My improved dress form ismade up of a body portion 14 :consisting of adjustable shoulder portions .15, bust and neck portions. 15?,s1de portions 16, waist portions 17,-and lower body portions 18 which include hip portions- The form lalso includes a tolda-i ble skirt portionx19.
.The skirt portion .19 is made up of sec tions 20, each section being composed of (in this instance) two flexible metalstrips' 21, which at one end are pivotally connected. at 22 toa plate 23. Eachsection 20 is adjustably connected to asimilar section by adjustable bands 24, 25 and '26, each band being made up of slidably connected band members 27 and 28 (Fig. 10) the band member 28 having a slot 29; and the band-member 27 a bolt '80 passing'through said slot, a wing-nut 31 being employed to secure the strips together after. being adjusted. As each skirt section is attached to a corresponding section 18 of the form, the said sec tion can be adjusted relative to each other.- When the sections 18 are moved apart or placed closer together, the wing-nuts 31 can be loosened in order that the skirt as a whole can be made larger or smaller. Asthe intermediate skirt-band 25 in this instance, is utilized to connect the skirt to a post 32, I provide adjustable arms 34 made up of the slidably connected members 35 and 36. Each arm at its inner end is connected to a fitting 37 slidable longitudinally of post 32, The sections 15 of the body portion 14 are connected by vertical links 38 to the sections 17 *adjacent thereto, said links 38 in turn being connected by transverse links 39. The
links 39 have a-slot 40 through which a bolt 41 carried by one of the adjacent sectionsl'f passes. The links 38 have slots 42. The bolt 41 passes through slot 12 in its adjacent link 38 and bolt 43, which is carried'by the section 17,'passes through slot 42 in its ad jacent link 38. The sections .16 are con nected. totheadjacen't 'sections '15 by links 44 pivoted to the adjacent section l5 at 45 n0 Each link 44 has a slot 46 through which a bolt 47 carried by the section 16 passes. Thebolts 47 pass through slots 48 in vertically disposed links 49 pivotally connected at 50 carries a plate 53." The" plates 53 of each pal" Qt sections 18 converge and'have passing throiighfltheir superimposed free ends a bolt which "passes through a slot 575' in the arm 56 of a spider 57 rotatably. and slid ably inotinted on post "32. By this means, the sections"18 can be moved toward or away "from post 32v to increase or decrease tlietliarrieterbf this region or the form. The sections? 1 8 are held adjusted positions nuts 58', sections 15 of the torm are connected to post 32 by platesf59 hav ingsi'gts tlO'through which the'threaded end 61"0t post 32 passes, theplates being held in adjusted positions by aknob 62v having a threaded engagement" with 'the post, the lmob acting asafinii't. I
To 'a'd"us t thewaist sections 17 inwardly or outw' ""dlytoincrease or decrease the di ameteri'ottiheiormat- 'the'waist, I provide a'sleeiie '63f wliich' surrounds post 32. and which is movable longitudinally otthe post (see""E-ig ;*3)."" The lowerendotsleeve 63 carries a bracket I64 made up of plates '65 and 66 clamped together by bolts 67 (see Fig. 74); The plates65 and66 retain there between a ring 6 8 which serves as the pivot foraflplur atlity on arms 69, "said plates having' alining slots 70l'to receive the heads 71 at'the inner end of said arms. Each arm 69 consists of a tubular member 80 and a spindle member 81 slidably engaging the tubular member 80' and held in. adjusted positions by binding-screws 82 (Fig. 8); The outer end oteach spindle-member 81 carries an eye 83; which engages the. hinge- members 84 and 85 and serves as a pivotal'connection for thehiiige members as well as a 'means tofconnectsections 17 and 18 to' the post7'132. thesleeve '63 longitudi n 32, l r'providfe' a handle consi of-r ver strips 86: and 87.;con-

WVith this form of .arm all side play or slackness is obviated, and with this form of adjustment torthe waist portion,'thewaist can be increasedor decreased in diameter by merely moving the handle A upwardly or downwardly atterloosening the bolts 93. The movement upwardly or downwardly upon the part of sleeve 63 will spread or contract the form at the waist region The sleeve 63 will be held in adjusted positions by tightening the bolts 93.
I To collapse the skirt portion 19, the term will be lowered to allow the bottom ot the skirt portion to rest-upon the floor, or stand (not shown) carrying post 32 and twisted, whereby the members forming" the skirt will fold into the condition illustrated in Fig.
connected to said sleeve and protruding from the upper part of the form and adapt"- ed to be drawn upwardly to cause an inward movement of said arms, oppositely disposed block members through which the "handle slides connected with said post member and located exteriorly of the neck portion of the form to lock the handle in adjusted positions. v '1 i i 2. In a garment form, a post member, adjustable sections v carried thereby, a sleeve slidable longitudinally of the post member, adjustable arms connecting said sleeve and certain of said adjustable sections, said arms consistingot a tubular portion and a spindle portion slidable 'within the tubularl portion, 1
